So You Think You Can Dance S10 Top 20 Revealed

23 06 2013

I could not believe it when I came home on Tuesday, June 11, and found my DVR did not record So You Think You Can Dance because of a glitch. I missed Vegas Hell Week. I tried to find it elsewhere but apparently my satellite company does not interact with Fox on-line for on-demand programming (although I can see it 30 days after the air date–what good is that going to do me. I also was not going to pay Hulu Plus for the chance to see it. I did watch the first 40 minutes live before I had to leave, but I took no notes. I do remember someone liking my #TruthInFikshun hash tag on Twitter, which I promptly claimed ownership and bragging rights.

This week’s episode announced the Top 20 and allowed us the opportunity to see them dance for the first time. Thirty-three contestants awaited their fate.

Du-Shaunt “Fik-Shun” Stegall and Mariah Spears made it through to the top 20. However, Emilio “Millie” Dosal, Phillip Cheeeb’s friend, made it, but had an injury and had to withdraw. Markus Shields who auditioned in season 4 and got to the green mile only to receive a “no”, received a “no” for a second time.

Song: “Ball” by T.I. featuring Lil Wayne

It was wonderful seeing a female hip-hop dancer this year. There was nice chemistry and synchronicity to their movements. Mariah was the stronger dancer her. As Cat was making introductions you could see Fik-Shun was a little sad that he didn’t get lavish praise from the judges. He seemed to take it in and sighed. It’s okay Fik-Shun–next week raise your game.

Makenzie Dustman (The contestant I thought rolled too much on the floor for her audition) is a yes. Jasmine Harper, Cyrus ex-girlfriend), gets a yes. A surprise yes was given to both Tucker Knox and Nico Greetham who went into the judges together. Ryan Johnson, who auditioned in Memphis, received a no for this season. There were several other contestants I did not recognize (whose names were not said) that also were turned down for this season.

This was a very strong performance by all 4 and I got them–yes GOOSEBUMPS! The judges felt the magic too and gave them a standing ovation.

Tappers Alexis Juliano and Curtis Holland both received a yes. Aaron Turner was an initially a “no” but when Emilio withdrew from the competition, Aaron was guy #11 so he was back in.

That was so enjoyable. Curtis had some balance issues at the end there, but the judges were also gave them a standing ovation.

Animators Jade Zuberi and Dragon House’s Dorian “BluPrint” Hector were both in the top 20.

That ROCKED! There were a few spots that should have been synchronized but were a bit off but it’s only week one. The mannequins moving freaked me out. The judges once again were on their feet.

While David Lorenzo was sent home, Carlos Garland, Hayley Erbert and Malece Miller were moving to the top 20.

I thought Carlos had some great partnering skills, catching Malece especially when she fell backwards. After being dropped on her head in Vegas, I bet she was scared. I LOVE Mia Michaels. Goosebumps again.

Brittany Cherry, Jenna Johnson and Paul Karmiryan were moved into the top 20, but Serge (?) from the Los Angeles auditions was a no. Two brothers, Alan and Gene Bersten, were pitted against each other and Alan was moving forward.

There were many “no” responses for the next group of individuals including Marissa Milele, Tessa, and Gabby Marquez. Amy Yakima from the Detroit auditions received a yes. They brought back Megan and Jasmine. This year, Jasmine Mason made it through.

Choreographer: Christopher Scott
Song: “Sand” by Nathan Lanier featuring Karen Whipple

Like a sandstorm happening. It is difficult to watch all 10 and say who stood out. I adored it. When Christopher Scott first joined the show, I did not quite understand his perspective. Either he has gotten better or I finally GOT it.

I adore Ray for getting sweaty during rehearsals with his group. It was a fun routine.

Top 20
Choreographer: Sonya Tayeh
Song: “Ghost of the Sky” (Epic Dub) by Steed Lord

Wow! How talented is Sonya that she created such a vehicle for such a diverse group of dancers to show off their strengths! I love warrior mama.

I am looking forward to seeing them perform next week for voting.

So You Think You Can Dance S10 Memphis Auditions

7 06 2013

LogoJoining resident judges Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe was entertainer Wayne Brady for this trip to Memphis, the final city of the auditions. (Please note that I do my commentary as I am watching the show, so this is why everything is in the present tense). Of course everyone trying out appeared to be NOT from Memphis.

Dorian “BluPrint” Hector, age 19, Atlanta, GA

I wonder why he is called that aside from his two-tone blue hair, blue sweatshirt, blue jeans and blue sneakers. Wonder if he blue eyes? He is from Dragon House, home of Cyrus who stole his way into our hearts last season. Would Dorian leave a “BluPrint” on our hearts? I like how he called himself a malfunctioning robot because I immediately got the reference. I think he should go straight to Vegas. Mary puts him on the hot tamale train and he gets that ticket.

Curtis Holland, age 8, Miami, Florida

He is the third tap dancer we have seen in the edited auditions. I like his personality. His tap is like watching someone in double speed, or how they used to make those old silent movies. His choreography had equal measure of humor and skill. The judges send him to choreography and then onto Vegas.

Tucker Knox, age 22, Nashville, TN

Made it to Juilliard but was in a tragic car accident and broke his spine among other injuries. He has really beautiful lines and control. His gymnast abilities are impressive. It was not as good as Anthony Savoy, but I think he has a ticket to Vegas awaiting him (and he does).

Courtney Thurston, age 18, Clifton, VA

Contemporary dancer. Some moves surprised me but there was a lot of rolling around on stage. I thought she was average by the standards of the show now in its 10th season. Her father married her dance teacher. I like the father. He said he did krump dancing. The judges insisted that he come up on stage. Dad had a few moves, but he is no krump dancer. The daughter is going to Vegas.

Shanshan Qiao-Rothlisberger, age 25, Albuquerque, NM

Performing a Mongolian dance called Ding Wan Wu. It was quite beautiful and I think she should go through to choreography and that is where the judges send her. After the choreography round, the judges send her to Vegas.

Nico Greetham, age 18, Woodbridge, VA

He danced a very unique contemporary dance that incorporated these cool staccato, locking-type movements timed perfectly with the music. He is going to Vegas.

Elyse Frelinger, age 23, Los Angeles, CA

She performed a contemporary dance that resembled her day job as a trapeze instructor at the Santa Monica Pier. It was fluid and unique. She gets a ticket to Vegas.

Day 2

Jenna Johnson, Age 18, Provo, Utah

She looks like Megan Fox’s cousin. Her cha-cha partner is 17 years of age and cannot try out…this year. They hold 4 national titles so I am expecting great things. They were good. I know in some years they have had more contemporary dancers than ballroom so I was sure Mary Murphy was thrilled to see all them. Without further comment from the judges, Jenna gets a ticket to Vegas.

Novien Yarber, age 21, Huntsville, Alabama

He is NOT a hip hop dancer just because he is black (he wants us to be clear on that). This boy is full of technique, strength and creativity. Triple threat. Was it perfect? No. But I would love to see the choreographers get their hands on him in the top 20. He runs down for his ticket to Vegas.

Isabel Freiberger, age 26, Chapel Hill, NC

This woman can do the salsa! I wanted her partner to try out, too, but he was not. I liked this better than the cha-cha of the other contestant. The judges send her to choreography just to see if she can do other things. She does not get a ticket to Vegas.

Caleb Brauner, age 20, Blue Springs, MO

I lived in Blue Springs for 3 months. I went to the high school there, too, for those few months of my freshman year. He does a little of everything. He had a lot of comedy in his routine but the dance had a story that was not abstract or difficult to interpret. I loved it. Nigel asked his dad to come up on stage and do hip-hop with Caleb. His father is just as much fun as Caleb is. Of course he is going to Vegas?

Larry Booze, age 29, Macon, GA

My ankles hurt watching him move. The flexibility and fluidity of his movement was magic. The three judges send him on to choreography. My ankles hurt watching him move. At choreography he does the gentlemanly thing and withdraws to give his choreography partner a better shot of making it. M

Jasmine Harper, age 19, Lawrenceville, GA

Cyrus’ ex???? Girlfriend. For a minute I thought we were going to find out Cyrus had a secret ex-wife. She is among my favorite female contemporary dancers we have seen thus far in the auditions. After tormenting her for a moment, they give her a ticket to Vegas.  My sister used to live in Lawrenceville for many years.

Paige Pellicano, age 19, Detroit, Michigan

Her dad is an Elvis impersonator. She is rolling too much around the ground for me, but she is a beautiful young lady. They send her to choreography but not to Vegas.

Next week: So You Think You Can Dance Vegas Hell Week!

So You Think You Can Dance S10 Boston Auditions

3 06 2013

Adam Shankman joined resident judges Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy.

Ashley Goldman and Phillip Kudryavstev

They are hot! She talks too much. He does not talk at all. But they dance wonderfully together. Vegas!

Natalie Vilos, age 29, from Laie Hawaii

Chose her Halloween outfit to audition. Her moves are not as tight as they need to be for this show. The lamp shade was hiding her flaws. I would say no to her. The judges agree. But before she leaves, Adam dances in it.

John Tesoriero, age 21, Boston

He collaborates with a beat boxer to do something unique. This is definitely that. It would be something I would remember. I think he should go through to choreography. The judges give him that chance. They loved his effort, but it was a no this year.

Katlyn Rodriguez, age 18, Brooklyn

Her little brother filled in for her missing partner. I think the brother was better but he is too young to compete. Mary got all choked up. She also loved her. Yes to choreography. She gets a ticket to Vegas from there.

Jennifer Jones, age 21, Philadelphia

The former ballerina who developed an eating disorder. I think she may be my new favorite. Vegas!

Tommy Tibball, age 21, Ozone Park, NY

I enjoyed his dancing. At first I thought it would be a disaster, but I was pleasantly surprised. Ticket to Vegas!

Jennie Begley, age 24, Aurora, Colorado

Her brother made it possible for her to be there today. I liked her dancing, but I am more of a fan of Jennifer Jones at the moment. Mary and Adam gave her a standing ovation. Adam said it was his favorite audition so far in Boston. Going to Vegas!

Day 2

Jason Kidd, age 19, Baltimore, Maryland

He won 5th place in dancing in germany, representing America. He is an animator. I think he may be as good as Cyrus. Vegas! He reminds me of Josh, mindy’s ex-boyfriend, on The Mindy Project.

Shizzy Shake (Shannon Tarantino), age 21, Bloomingdale, NJ

After watching her interview, I was not expecting her to dance so beautifully. I like being surprised. She might be my favorite contemporary audition so far. Vegas

Elena and Gene Bersten, husband and wife, age 29 and 25, Minneapolis, Minnesota

He has great hips! They were great together. I think they should go to Vegas. They are going to Vegas!

Ernest E-Knock Phillips, age 26, Waterbury, VT

He almost lost himself after his cousin died, but found purpose again as a hip-hop instructor in Vermont. That was a very emotional audition and I could feel his pain. I found myself crying. I saw Adam crying as well. They all send him through to choreography. It is no to Vegas.

Alexis Juliano, age 18, Coral Springs, Florida

Nigel has a soft spot for tappers. I thought she was fabulous. She has a great personality as well. She is going to Vegas!

Anthony Bryant, age 28, Elkin, North Carolina

Ribbon boy from season 1. It was interesting. He always gives the unexpected. I would say yes to choreography to see him without the silly costume. But when the judges want to send him to choreography, he declines. His attitude always gets in his own way. I do not think they should allow him to have a spotlight for another year.

Anthony Savoy, age 24, New York, NY

I got goosebumps and very emotional seeing him dance. I heard his voice. Top 20 material to be sure. After the fiasco with the other Anthony, they said yes to choreography to show people how to accept that humbly, and they made him walk back to the microphone for his ticket to Vegas.

Kate Kapshandy, age 23, Hoboken, NJ

Dances with Maks from season 5. She holds many titles, 2 Latin and 2 in 10 dance. Definitely the best they have showed us so far in ballroom. Mary gives her the first hot tamale train woo-hoo. Adam did a wonderful Bruno imitation (from Dancing With The Stars). Straight to Vegas. And Adam Shankman gets an award from best Bruno imitation EVER.

Toshihiko Nakazawa, age 28, Harlem, NY

He was memorable. His moves are not tight enough. I would have said yes to choreography. But they said yes to Vegas.

How Dance Changed Their Lives

24 05 2013

Some fantastic news from tWtich! Congratulations to them both!

So You Think You Can Dance S10 Austin Auditions

22 05 2013

Minnie Driver joined Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe in Austin.Logo

JFreeze is a mini-Cyrus. He is a bit too young to be on the show; however, he IS going to Disney!

Hayley Erbert, Topeka, Kansas

Great dancer but she is not like Amy Yakima who has been the best contemporary girl I have seen so far. She gets a ticket to Vegas.

Donovan Gibbs, El Paso, Texas, age 18

I am not sure if that was lyrical hip-hop, but it was fabulous. He had me at the first note. The judges bring mom and dad down and send dad to the stage for a dance off. Donovan is going to Vegas!

Dannon O’Brien, Austin age 20

This was one of the more interesting background interviews. Their family runs a charitable haunted house and how adores doing it. Mom says it helps him to release that creative side of himself. He has a lot of strength in those legs. He is one of those people whose dance you will remember. His dancing had a great deal of emotion in it, particularly toward the end. Going to Vegas!

Shane Garcia, age 20, Tamarac, Florida (bone breaking style of dance, footwork and animation.)

When he said that he began dancing to speak freely, I became very emotional. I am not sure I can watch bone-breaking dance without cringing. But it also makes sense to me. There are moments of fluidity with the footwork, the animation with its abrupt movements, mixed with the twisting nature of the bone-breaking. I can only imagine that having a problem stuttering may be very much like that in his real world. Put him through to Vegas judges! It is a yes to choreography instead. Ugh! But then good news–he is through to Vegas.

Daniela Bustillos, age 21, Austin

She is living the American dream, having immigrated here and discovering all the freedoms that were not available to her in Venezuela. Nigel asked her mom to take his seat at the judges’ table. She was an average contemporary dancer. She has some skill there that could be helped with the talent from the show. Yes to choreography. I did not think it was strong enough. But she is through to Vegas.

Nick Muckleroy, age 21, from Houston (Whoop, whoop!)

He is a strong dancer. I wish he did not try so hard to keep eye contact with the judges. It felt out of place. I think it would have taken it to another level by getting lost in the dance and it bringing us in with him–like quicksand. He has beautiful lines and great strength. He also melded several types of dance within the audition. What he did with those splits where he moved forward by flexing his thigh muscle–something I have never seen before. Mary felt it was a religious experience. He is going to SOAR to Vegas. I will definitely keep the home boy in my Vegas sights.

Guess who’s back? The Xcercist, Hampton Williams! And his baby, Kiera (age 4). OMG. She is ADORABLE? And his girlfriend. The audience ATE it up. So did I. Darlecia Goggins is the girlfriend. They are 3 tickets to Vegas. Check this out.

Next week: Boston!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So You Think You Can Dance S10 Detroit Auditions

22 05 2013

SYTYCDLogoThe judges at the Detroit auditions were Stephen “tWitch” Boss, Nigel Lythgoe, and Mary Murphy.

Jade Zuberi, Dearborn Heights, age 21

I think he is our Cyrus for this year. The muscle isolation involved in his movement is one of the new wonders of the world. The judges gave him a standing ovation. He is going to Vegas.

Amy Yakima, Northville, MI, age 19

After inviting her father up on stage it is clear who wears the dance shoes in this family–Amy. She reminds me a little bit of winner Melanie Moore with the passion and emotions that she channels through her dance steps. She is lost in her dance, and I was lost with her in that dance. I got goosebumps. She received a standing ovation from the judges. She is obviously through to Vegas.

Morgan “Mo” Williams, Chicago, age 22

I did not feel that his level of dance was up to par with what we have grown to expect from people on the show. He has had some training, but he has a long way to still grow. Nigel wants to see him in choreography but Mary overrules him with a ticket to Vegas.

Will “Sysko” Green, Detroit, MI, age 27

Sysko specializes in a local dance called the Detroit Jit. I have never seen that type of dance before. It was like a smash up of jitterbug meets b-boy. It was entertaining, but did look unpolished during some moments. I bet you he goes to choreography. Mary goes on stage to get a hip-roll dance from him. Okay–that will get him to Vegas! Nope! They all send him to choreography. Ultimately he is sent home because he tried to freestyle during his partnering dance and put his partner in danger.

To show people that you never stop learning as a dancer, tWitch treated us to a popping, locking hip hop that we so adore in him. He was a little Pac-Man with the music that was playing that reminded me of the game! I’d like to be the ghosts chasing after all that yummy goodness. Yes, I said it. I think I have added something to my Bucket List.

In his self-described style called “panic”, Garrett Frye, age 26, from Bowling Green, Ohio, showed that he has some flexibility and rhythm–he should think about getting some professional lessons. It is a “no” to the competition, but it sure did make me smile.

Tyrone Cobham, Jr.,  Toledo, Ohio, age 18

This is the first tapper they have shown us during the auditions do far. He has some very complicated, impressive moves. The judges are all standing. Nigel and Mary say that he really had the best performance in all 10 seasons. VEGAS BABY!

The best part of tonight’s show was the grandmother doing gangham style with her granddaughter after she was given a ticket to Vegas. The judges came up on stage and joined in.

Last up was a group of young men doing exotic dancing for a living. The first young man, Darryl “Smilez” Harrell has a terrific sense of humor. He has some great talent and threw some krumping into the mix. They let the rest of the group audition including DeFonte “Prince Charming” Thomas. His dancing was so different and bizarre. It looked like his head belonged on another body. It was fascinating. These two were staying for choreography. Smilez had trouble learning the dance and partnering but Prince Charming gave it his best try. It was not perfect but he is going to Vegas.

Next: LA Auditions Day 2

So You Think You Can Dance S10 Los Angeles Auditions

15 05 2013

So You Think You Can Dance — Season 10 — Los Angeles Auditions

Tonight’s judges are our resident judges Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy with guest judge, Jesse Tyler Ferguson

Contestant: Du-Shaunt “Fik-Shun” Stegall, Las Vegas Nevada, a street performer, age 18

He was so much fun. I loved the booty popping. He had a bright smile and a great attitude. What fabulous body control he had when he went down into that semi-backbend swirl-like move towards the end. The judges gave him a standing ovation. Straight to Vegas.

Contestant: Malece Miller, age 19, Salt Lake City, Utah, contemporary dancer

I like this girl. She is beautiful, radiates light, and has an awesome sense of humor. Her story growing up is one we have heard many times on this show. That backspring into a sit position took my breath away for a moment. And I am a big fan of her haircut. Straight through to Vegas.

Contestant: Paul Karmiryan from Glendale, CA, age 21, Latin ballroom. Won SYTYCD in Armenia. Hmmm. If you win in one country, should you be allowed to enter in another? I say no.

It was okay. It was crisp and sharp. He had nice foot work. If he had tried out for the first time without having won on another version of the show I would say okay. I have mixed feelings. Mary loved it. He is through to Vegas.

Contestant: Elijah Laurant, age 20, Los Angeles, CA

I was upset that they kept cutting away to the judges’ faces. Just as I was being drawn in by the craftsmanship of this extraordinary dancer, it would cut away. DRAT. Absolutely going to Vegas.

Contestant: Taylor Ward, Claremont, CA, age 20.

Oh my God. My heart just broke for her. She had given up her academic scholarships and sports scholarships to dance with the blessing of her grandfather who raised her, but passed away before he could see her try out. She was rehearsing during a break called by the judges and crack went the knee, a dislocation. And yet she still tried out. She has beautiful lines despite her injury and a beautiful heart. Yes to choreography and from there she was on to Vegas.

Contestant: Morris Isby, B-boy, age 28, Sacramento, CA

Impressive resume. I am reminded of Legacy a little bit. The kneel-crawl move was something I have not seen before. Yes to choreography, but he was close to getting a ticket to Vegas but still has some work to do.

Contestant: Armen “Armen Way” Avetisov, age 27, Glendale, CA

A Russian rapper who likes to make cheesy videos with women in bikinis washing cars. I don’t think I like this person. When he danced, it was truly all about him even though he was partnering with a beautiful woman. Self -worship I would call it. Sloppy foot work. I liked the woman dancing better but she was not a signed-up contestant. Mary loved him, however. Gave him an automatic ticket to Vegas.

Gr818Ers: The father was known as Papa Wiz a famous b-boy in the 1990’s. They stopped doing much of anything because he died unexpectedly when they were young boys. They founded the group to bring positivity back to the community. Trying out we’re Eric and Lorenzo Chapman, age 21 and 22 respectively, from Pacoima, CA. I thought it was wonderful. What tremendous role models they are. Nigel offered them help from Dizzyfeet Foundation.

The choreography round was with Marko and Sasha. It was so great to see them back again.

Tomorrow night: Detroit with guest judge Stephen tWitch Boss!

Update:  Day 2 of the LA auditions seen on Tuesday, May 21.

Brooklyn “Flex Dancer” (bone breaking, hat tricks and glides, animation) Nicholas “Slick” Stewart

This guy is not double-jointed–he’s multijointed.  I think he might be the modern-day reference of the song, “Rubberband Man.”  He is entertaining, but I would want him back for choreography to see if he could at least try to partner with another person.  Maybe Ringling Brothers is hiring.  The judges agree to send him to choreography.  But Slick was headed home.

Alex Kessinger, age 18, Riverside, CA.

Nigel is drooling over her.  I think there is too much rolling on the ground.  VEGAS

Sebastian Serra from Puerto Rico. It was good, not great.  He is going to Vegas.

Latin dancers Mariia Lebedeva and Misha Smagin are some of the few Latin dancers in the crowd and a heck of a lot better than Armen.  Mary does the WOOOOOO!

Emilio “Millie” Dosal. He is Phillip Cheeb’s friend.  Yes to choreography. He is going to Vegas.

Makenzie Dustman

It was a typical routine I thought.  There were lots of floor rolling.  I never connected to her emotionally.  She is going to Vegas
