Touch S2E5 “Eye To Eye” Recap

22 03 2013

As much as I abhor the phrase “taking it to the next level,” the writers of around just did. The show is picking up its pace in storytelling. Jake and Amelia come so close to meeting. Lucy makes a decision that starts her down a path of darkness. Guillermo takes an innocent life (i.e. A life deviates from his supposed path to glorify God or ridding the world of the 36 righteous ones. Does this make him a Godless murderer per Avram’s description? If he took the life of this holy man (Father Esteban), what is to stop him from killing Avram?

I do understand they needed a mythology but if one reads about the righteous ones in the Talmud, there really is no way to rid the world of them. If one loses their way, God puts another on this path. Once any of these individuals knows they are part of this group, they are no longer one of them. But I’ll go along with this because the story is so compelling.

This episode also ponders if the end justifies the means. Even love can be corrupted. All the people are operating from this point of view. Guillermo’s love of God is his motivation. Lucy’s mother-bear instincts to protect her daughter make her do the unthinkable in order to find her. Calvin’s love for his brother, and in part his guilt that arose from tragedy, motivates him to kidnap Amelia to find a way to heal his brother. Even Martin tells Calvin he will kill him if he touches Jake. Love is such a powerful motivator but it often blinds us on the path.

Recap

Jake (David Mazouz) and Amelia (Saxon Sharbino) both dream of the moment they meet on the pier 29 at Marina Del Rey.

Pic1

Jake and Amelia meet in a dream

“Human beings are hard-wired to connect. We are drawn to one another by our own chemistry. We produce attachment hormones that create intimacy. We build neural bridges that bond us, brain to brain, heart to heart. Those bonds, once formed, are not meant to be broken.

[Red flower in flower pot where Martin stands in the kitchen.]

Jake combed his hair for his first-ever play date with Soleil (Isabella Acres). But first waffles! Jake makes the microwave explode so the timer reads 8877. Tonight’s number. That means breakfast on the way to Soleil.

Pic3

Tonight’s number is 8877.

Lucy (Maria Bello) is wearing a red-striped shirt. She tells Martin (Kiefer Sutherland) a sweet story about falling asleep with Amelia, but she has not done that for 1100 days.

Pic4

Martin and Lucy

Kase (John Boyd) enters the restaurant and plays the arcade game next to Jake. Martin pays for breakfast [big red tomato on his plate]. Kase calls Calvin (Lukas Haas) and Calvin tells him to follow them and find out where they live.

pic5

Red everywhere

In Mexico? [red in flag]

Pic6

More red

Father Esteban (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) is asked to administer the sacrament of reconciliation.

Pic7

Father Esteban

Martin passes a 7-Eleven (ironically the same colors of the Mexican flag) and sees Kase following them. Martin pulls into a parking garage, Kase follows, but Martin stops Kase’s car, pulls him out and beats him up. When security catches up to them, Martin leaves the scene.

Pic8

7-Eleven looks like the Mexican flag.

Jake heads into Soleil’s house where Martin and Lucy meet Soleil’s mom, Beth Friedman (Wendy Benson-Landes) and Soleil’s grandfather (remember that Frances Norburg and Carl Hirsch (Randy Oglesby) know each other from her former job). They go to make cupcakes. Jake takes Carl’s cell phone and scrolls to Frances’ name.

Pic9

Frances Norburg’s cell number

Guillermo (Said Taghmaoui) feels he needs absolution to continue his mission to kill the 36, and Father Esteban is the unlucky priest to hear it. He says, “As a servant of God I know what I must do; as a man, it hurts”. [Remorse!] He confesses that he is one of the 36. [Talk about the ultimate self-hatred. That means that he ultimate plans to kill himself once the 35 are gone]. Father Esteban leaves the confessional when he cannot give him absolution. Guillermo runs out after him and they both see what each other looks like.

Pic11

Guillermo meets Father Esteban

Lucy and Martin tell Trevor what Calvin has been up to with Amelia and Jake. Martin confesses he lied to Lucy about the meeting with Calvin, and she gets all righteous about keeping secrets yet I do not see her tell him she went to the police. She says, “Truth–not truth–it’s either one or the other”. Martin tells Lucy that this has to be on Jake’s schedule.

Amelia takes Frances’ phone and some money. The phone rings; it’s Jake! He puts 8877 into the phone. Amelia is so smart to cover her trail too. Kase comes into the kitchen and Amelia doubles over in pain [faking it, very well I might add by collapsing to the floor]. Kase and Amelia go to the hospital. She is whisked away while the doctor takes Kase to treat his injuries.

Pic10

Fake-out!

Trevor finds information on the web about Frances Norburg. She has another child, William (David Hoflin)! She is on the board of directors of The Greyber Institute (where William is) a private residence for neuroeducation made possible by a grant from–ta-da–Calvin Norburg. Martin and Lucy head over there. [The symbol of the Greyber Institute is the tree of life, the same symbol that is on Guillermo’s blade cover].

Pic12

Once there Martin finds a door that requires a code and he puts in 8877 which he remembered from the microwave. They see Frances and William. Martin wants to get information first before they confront her. He pretends to have a wife at the facility. Frances seems like a decent human being. William was in an accident 4 years prior when the car Calvin was driving went into the water. William is in a “persistive vegetative state” but Frances believes he can understand her. Calvin is trying to find a way to get William communicating again.

Pic13

William and Frances Norburg

The cupcakes come out of the oven. [There is a bottle of oil on the cabinet that has the brand name “Star” next to another bottle that has red in it.].

Pic14

“Star” brand oil. And more red.

When Soleil looks for cupcake wrappers, Jake leaves out the back door. [Lots of red references on the cabinet island.]. Jake heads out to meet up with Amelia.

Pic15

Lots of red.

At the hospital Amelia uses a hospital computer to find out where 8877 is. She leaves [with a red ambulance parked outside as she exits].

Martin tells Lucy what he learned. Carl calls Martin to tell him Jake is gone. He tells Lucy to take the car and see what she can find out. Meanwhile Kase calls Frances to tell her Amelia is gone.

Father Esteban shares his encounter with Father San Felipo (Castulo Guerra) and says when he looked into Guillermo’s eyes it was like seeing the devil himself. He questions which is worse–to the break the seal of Canon law or to remain silent and allow others to die?

Lucy visits with William and sees Calvin’s cell number 416-506-01?? She tells him there has been a breakthrough with his brother. Calvin is in his way.

Martin sees bus 8877 heading to Marina Del Rey. Martin hops on.

Pic17

Bus 8877

Jake enters the Oceanfront Arcade at 8877.

Pic18

Oceanfront Arcade at 8877

He heads over to the Donkey Kong game [remember he plays that at BreakWire]. He scores 29 and puts in his name.

Pic19

Donkey Kong

Lucy introduces herself and threatens to kill William with a syringe filled with something. Security comes in and Lucy has to run for it (the syringe was filled with water). When she gets back in the car she calls Trevor to see if he can find more information.

Pic20

Lucy and William

[Isn’t that the same security guard who was at the desk at the building where the law firm was?]

Amelia arrives at the arcade.

Pic21

Amelia gets closer to Jake.

Kase and Frances figure out where she is headed and leave to get her.

Amelia sees the Donkey Kong game. She plays, gets the same score and leaves her name [I guess it would be too easy if Jake hung out and just met her at the game, huh?].

Pic22

Amelia plays Donkey Kong

Martin arrives. He sees the Donkey Kong game, takes a picture of it, sends it to Lucy and tells her to get over there now; it’s time.

Father Esteban contemplates going into the police station.

Calvin talks to William that he is making progress, getting closer. William shocks him when his thumb closes in on Calvin’s hand.

Pic23

William holds Calvin’s hand for the first time since the accident.

Lucy meets up with Martin and he tells her to look for something with number 29.

The sequence that was shown in the dream seems to be happening. Martin and Lucy find pier 29 and Jake. [There is an extra wearing a red shirt standing next to something that is also red.]

Pic24

More red

Lucy spots Amelia and runs towards her. Amelia smiles when she sees her mother.  However Kase and Frances pull up, Frances opens the door. Kase grabs her and throws her in the car. Frances jumps in the back seat, Kase hops in the driver’s side and they drive off as Amelia hands hit the window. Jack embraces a grieving Lucy.

Pic25

A grieving Lucy

Frances tries to justify Amelia’s abduction to Amelia, but all Amelia right now wants is her mother.

In Mexico, Father Esteban wants to report a crime, but of course, he has to go to the bathroom first. Guillermo gives him a last chance to give him absolution. [Hard choice-absolution or death? I think I would pretend absolution with my fingers crossed behind him and the turn him in].

Pic27

Poor Father Esteban; we hardly knew him. The ultimate red: Blood!

Martin goes in to console Jake and gets the surprise of his life–Jake takes his hand and holds it. Martin cries.  [I cry.]

Pic26

Tears and a red blanket.

Trevor calls Lucy with a lead to the foundation, “Mandelbrot”. [Mandelbrot was a famous mathematician where we got fractal geometry who recently died in 2010]. They just bought a loft downtown. Lucy goes alone and sees him. And she runs him over into the fence.

Pic28

This is not good. What a mother will do for her child.

Touch (S2E5) “Perfect Storm” Recap

28 02 2013

The danger to Jake draws closer as does finding Amelia. Jake has a girlfriend! There are lots of Easter eggs in this episode with the color red, the reference to stars. Even Citrus O makes an appearance. Avram’s back! The number tonight is 5991.

Pic4

Lucy (Maria Bello) wakes Martin (Kiefer Sutherland) up to show him a timeline board she created as part of her hypothesis of where Amelia (Saxon Sharbino) is.

Pic1

Jake (David Mazouz) narrates: “Sometimes storms do not arrive full-blown. Sometimes they build up for days or even weeks. An arctic storm moving southward can suddenly crash into a tropical hurricane that’s driving north. And when this collision of weather systems occur, it causes the storm to explode, a subtotal of their destructive energy is far greater what any of them would have been had they remained on their own, creating what meteorologists call “perfect conditions” for a deadly storm. A perfect storm.”

Guillermo (Said Taghmaoui) is in New York. A young man (Joe Abraham) [who looks like Josh Groban’s shorter cousin] delivers dry cleaning to Paul at Martin’s old building.

Pic2

Guillermo has caught up to Jake pretty quickly, but the door person (John Barbolla) tells him there is no forwarding address.

Pic3

Jake brings a red umbrella with him on his first full day of school. Jake’s phone rings. It’s Avram! (Bodhi Elfman) [I adore his character]. Jake called him 3 times the night previous so he assumed it was Jake. Avram tells Jake a joke and Jake laughs for the first time. Martin and Avram do the cliff-notes catch-up. Guillermo is now tailing Avram. [And I’m terrified he will be the next casualty].

Pic5

Avram tells Jake a joke

Martin meets with Calvin (Lukas Haas) and obtains Mallory Cane’s red-level pass card. He tells him to avoid the offices where his partner, Tony (Adam Campbell), occupies.

Kase (John Boyd) tries to buy a spring-loaded pinball machine from Hiroshima (Toshi Toda), but gets one that is electronic. Shigeru Fukura (Shawn Huang) won’t let him down.

Guillermo breaks into Avram’s apartment looking for clues to Jake’s whereabouts. [There is a star on the package on the desk.] Guillermo hides in the closet when Avram returns.

Pic6

The packaging has a star (on the desk).

[Easter egg alert: with 2 bottles of Citrus O].

Pic7

Blurry, but it’s hard to screen cap a moving bottle of Citrus O

Avram plans to meet with someone at the Beth Ahavah synagogue. Avram notices the chair is not in the place he left it. Guillermo breaks out his knife, but Avram leaves before he has to use it. [That was scary].

Pic8

There are scarier things than spiders in your closet.

Jake smiles when he sees that Soleil (Isabella Acres) gets rabbit hutch clean-up duties with him [words on a red background]. I think Jake has a crush. His bunny, Fluffy, goes missing but Jake finds him [lots of kids with red in the crowd.]

Pic9

Soleil tells them not to touch Jake, but Jake seems okay with it now. What a kid will do for love!

Pic16

Jake is letting others touch him. Wonder if they have to change the name of the show now.

Martin goes to room 1075 at Aster Corps but the computer servers are gone. Martin changes the game plan and goes directly to Tony’s office. [There are red things on a table near the desk.] Martin tells a version of the truth, and says he thinks Calvin is insane and as a reporter he is obligated to tell the truth. Tony asks how much money Martin would want to do this story. Martin writes down a number which Tony says is doable. If he can open the encrypted files, Martin and Tony have a deal.

Pic10

Red, red everywhere

Lucy heads over to Trevor (Greg Ellis) at BreakWire. After narrowing the results to unsolved murders who were geniuses or savants, they get 18 matches. She asks Trevor to put the picture she has through facial recognition software.

Pic11

Kase waits for the new machine to arrive [while under red umbrellas. The machine casing is also red.]

Pic12

Red pops everywhere

Avram leaves Temple. Guillermo tries the direct approach and asks for information on Jake. Avram won’t help him. Guillermo gives him his room number at the hotel, 5991. [Danger Will Robinson!]  When asked by his companions who that was, Avram says he is enemy of the 36. He calls Jake immediately.

Pic13

Enemy and protector of the 36 Righteous Ones meet

Martin opens the file with the number and tony tells him to download all Calvin’s files to Calvin’s laptop. Martin is left alone for a short time and he also finds files in Adeline Danvers. Her DOB is 4/11/1998. He finds a brain scan image. The files are dated after Aster Corps lost her. Martin makes the connection that Calvin has Amelia. The timeline fits as well. Tony puts a GPS tracking device on the laptop.

Pic14

Amelia’s brain imaging

Amelia tells Frances (Linda Gehringer) what the numbers mean, “The numbers define the recurrence relation of interconnecting parallel and distributing systems — systems that strive for beauty and completeness, that permeate all structures, forms and proportions, whether cosmic or individual, organic or inorganic, acoustic, or optical. The magnetic resonance in spins of cobalt niobate crystals proves their existence at the atomic scale. But I believe the proportions are evident in the human genome DNA. These systems appear in recognizable biological settings, too, like the branching in trees, phyllotaxis, and the fruit sprouts of pineapple.”

Amelia is hooked up to the machine and Kase injects her with radioactive contrast. [Frances is officially evil. She knows what they are doing to Amelia. She, however, makes sure that this experiment won’t frighten her.] The pachinko machine is completely random (that is, no skill required). They are using it to gauge Amelia’s ability to predict the future. The setup will convert Amelia’s responses into binary code. Amelia is teaching a supercomputer [why is War Games now popping into my mind?).

Pic15

Amelia teaches a supercomputer.

The laundry guy’s brother got Avram access to Guillermo’s room. He says that they are aware of his mission and are happy to do it. Guillermo leaves the hotel and walks past the red doorman at The Middleton Hotel.

Avram gasps when he sees Jake in Guillermo’s portfolio. Guillermo returns. [When he locks the hotel room door, I fear Avram is about to be killed.] Guillermo is from the Jesuit order [great, another priest scandal, LOL] He says he is on a mission of mercy, to rid the world of the 36 so the natural order of God can be restored. Guillermo puts a knife up to Avram’s throat, but he says that if he deviates from killing the 36, which he is. It, then he is just a Godless murderer. Avram leaves.

Pic17

Mission from God or Godless murderer?

Martin shows Lucy Calvin’s computer (and Amelia’s brain imaging).  Lucy wants to go to the police, but Martin reminds her they cannot do that. Lucy storms off to the police department anyway. The police think she is a delusional, grieving mother.

Pic18

Trevor & Lucy — but notice the red star on the left.

Pic19

Lucy at police station; notice red sticky note in the background.

Kase shows Calvin Jake’s file. His scores are higher than Amelia. Imagine if we had two of them? The progress would leap forward. Calvin recognizes Martin. When they meet later, Calvin threatens Martin.

Martin picks Jake up and Soleil tells Martin they’ve been “dating” for 4 hours now. Avram is calling to warn them about Guillermo. He thanks Jake for the warning. When Jake and Martin arrive home, they use the red umbrella because it finally rains.

Pic20

Young, in love, and now dating for 4 hours. She likes the strong silent type.

The lies begin between Martin and Lucy. He does not tell her about Jake; she does not tell him that she went to the police. He does share about Avram said. Martin tells Lucy that Calvin did not show.

Pic21

Let the lies begin!

“And when these perfect storms hit you have to recognize them for what they are, acknowledge their awesome power, and hold on tight.”

TOUCH (S2E4) Enemy of My Enemy Recap

23 02 2013

TouchLogo4“For the purpose of travels, both inward and outward, is not merely to see the unseen but to bring those wishes home, to share with those we love.” The magic number tonight is 1075! Stars and the color red are embedded heavily throughout the episode.  Some of my commentary is embedded in bold italics within the recap.

Lucy (Maria Bello) gets boxes from her husband sent to PO Box 457, tracking number 1Z14785, NJ–1075–CA. [I tried the QR code but it was not valid (sad face). What would have been infinitely MORE interesting would have been for it to lead to fox.com/touch or something else really cool like hidden bonus features for the episode.]

Pic1

Lucy encourages Martin (Kiefer Sutherland) to send Jake (David Mazouz) to school where Soleil Friedman (Isabella Acres) goes. Jake pulls out a picture of a birthday party with Lucy and Amelia (Saxon Sharbino). Guillermo (Said Taghmaoui) is lurking in the background, but they don’t know who this man really is yet.

Pic2

Martin gets a text to meet at Lebanon Street off 6th, at 10 a.m. with presumably Calvin. Martin meets with Trevor (Greg Ellis). He wants Calvin (Lukas Haas) to think he is a reporter. Martin needs a cover backstory and Trevor needs a reporter of Martin’s caliber. Martin accepts.

Pic3

At the border of Pakistan and Afghanistan, it is 64.9 km to Peer Kalay, 207 to Kabul and 568 to Kandahar. Mallory Cane (Audrey Marie Anderson) tells her husband (Mackenzie Astin) on the phone that she thinks her hotel room phone has been tapped. The border guards take her into custody as her husband listens. The green flag is shown [it has a star on it]. The guard has a red circle that looks like the pattern Jake sees also like the QR code on Lucy’s package.

Pic4

Pic5

The color red is back! Jake has a red and gray striped shirt. Lucy’s tablet is red. Jake is drawing a pattern on a napkin of an oval with a circle in the middle, actually looks like a spaceship. There is a woman walking in the background with a red dress. [I know the picture I’m clipping looks like the umbrellas are orange, but I think that is just the quality of my picture; it was red when it aired.]

Pic6

Pic7

Jake hands it to a woman sitting near them (Patricia Rae). It makes the woman upset and she tries to give it back to Jake. Lucy asks her if she knows Amelia. The woman does not respond to the question and Jake hands her purse to her, not before lifting an envelope from it. It is addressed to Seaman Vicente Corliss, Bldg 1075 Port Hueneme Naval Base, Port Hueneme, CA. When Lucy sees the number matches her box, she opens it. It contains cash and a picture of a man who looks like Guillermo. The letter says, “You must find him. I no longer can.” The note looks like a suicide letter from someone to Vicente. Lucy is boiling water in a red kettle to open the envelope with the steam.

Pic8

Pic8A

A limo pulls up for Martin and he gets in.

Jake narrates: “From the smallest amoeba to the grandest of galaxies, we define ourselves by our borders. I am me; therefore I am not you. We are safe within our territory, but borders can be places of instability, of danger. Cold fronts collide with warm; dynamic energy explodes. Yet it’s at the edges, the frontiers between us, where ideas are exchanged, where knowledge is gained. I am me but I must push past my borders if I am ever truly to know you.”

The woman looks for something on a map. Amelia draws tides in the Arabian Sea and labels Pakistan. There are red numbers on the map. She has a box decorated with butterflies [a few of them red].

Pic9

Martin meets Calvin who is firing a gun at a range. He remembers Martin from the elevator. Martin says he believes Aster Corps is involved with criminal activity such as murder and kidnapping. Calvin says that the average person is lied to up to 200 times per day. Despite hating guns, Martin has some pretty awesome aim. Calvin approves.

Pic10

Mallory is wearing a red scarf as she is escorted to prison. The guard thinks she is a spy but she tells him she is in sales.

The book at Amelia’s house is “To Kill A Mockingbird”. Frances (Linda Gehringer) says, “Today won’t be a workday; it’s a chance to get to know each other.” Amelia is speed reading.

Pic11

Back in the limo, Calvin directs Martin to building “J” , top floor, room 1075. He will need a red-level pass card. Mallory Cane has one. Calvin wants Martin to find her. He believes she can be persuaded to give him her card. Apparently Calvin wants his research back [or so he says].

At the naval base, Lucy and Jake meet with Vicente (Alex Ruiz). His aunt wrote the note. “So you’ve been out of touch?”. [Cute line]. The portrait is of the man who killed Vicente’s mother 4 years ago by slicing her throat. [Yep. That sounds like our Guillermo.] Aunt Sofia and his mom, Claudia Corliss, were identical twins. His mother was a savant astronomer with amazing insight who did not talk much either. [Star reference there.] She predicted the trajectory of the Corliss Comet. The picture that Jake drew was the path of the comet. He asks them to find his aunt. The Corliss Comet has a cycle of 122 years but it can be viewed that evening. Lucy theorizes that Sofia will wait to see that before she tries to kill herself.

Pic12

Frances gets out a red board game called Tokeekol [not a real game name]. Amelia talks about the book, about “not understanding a person until you see their point of view.” It’s on page 177, 12 lines from the bottom. Amelia moves her piece then rolls the red dice (which match, number 9). The woman asks her if she knows what she’ll roll next. Amelia moves the woman’s piece 2 moves; the woman rolls snake eyes. Amelia sees herself winning the entire game.

Pic13

Mallory meets with a man who threatens she’ll be sent to Bannu prison if she is not honest.

Martin goes to Mallory’s house. Her husband tries to choke him. She has been working on a program called T1 security program that Aster Corps sold to Pakistan. She found a flaw. Innocent people would be hurt. She threatened to go public when her supervisor did not act. Martin finds a file called the Fibonacci Project. He also finds a file for a bill to Stanford House on patient Adeline Danvers. And something called The Danvers Project. There is an expense memo for August 25-28 for meals, hotel and transport for a total of 800.27. He sees a dental bill for a “cavity fill with cap”. [I wonder if she has some kind of implant.] That was the cover name for Amelia. Martin thinks she is being hidden, that Aster Corps does not know where she is because the money trail ends 3 weeks prior.

Pic14

Pic15

At BreakWire, Jake is trying to call locally 1-323-78 to 1-310-64. The principal of Soleil’s school (Patricia Bethune) calls Martin. Jake made the connection between the two of them. School starts at 8:50 and Jake wants to go.

Pic16

T1’s sole purpose was to profile terrorists. The web says too many innocent people are being snagged. Calvin helped design it. Aster Corps is using it to set her up. Calvin is going to jam the program to give them time for her to be released but he needs a connection in Pakistan and Martin can help there–a man in LA named Nazim Farzat (Sanjay Chandani). It is the man who picks up Lucy and Sofia on the highway to bring them back to Lucy’s car in a later scene.

Pic19

Lucy goes to the Astraeus Society’s observatory. The comet viewing was cancelled because of cloud cover.

Jake is typing 1075 repetitively on the laptop. Amelia is writing the same number on her map. Lucy knocks Sofia out of the way at mile marker 1075. She says she should have been killed not her sister [which makes me immediately think she is Claudia and not Sofia since they were identical.]

Pic18

[Nope I was wrong.] Sofia met Guillermo at her bar and invited him home. Guillermo became violent and tried to kill her. Sofia stuck him in the side of the neck with sewing scissors, but he killed Claudia and walked out the door with the scissors still stuck in his neck. Lucy explains that this guy thought Sofia was Claudia.

The guards throw Mallory out with her Aster Corps ID badge and bags.

Pic20

When dropping Jake off, he goes into the lengthy detail about what Jake likes and does not. Soleil is very excited to see Jake.

Pic21

“We cross borders; we explore new frontiers, frontiers of the heart, frontiers of the soul. And if we’re lucky, we go home again having learned great lessons of our shared destiny. For the purpose of travels, both inward and outward, is not merely to see the unseen but to bring those wishes home, to share with those we love.”

Mallory goes home.

Pic22

Sofia reunites with Vicente.

Pic23

Lucy asks Martin if he can trust Calvin. Calvin confirms Mallory is home. He uses an access code pad and thumb-print scanner [Really? No retinal scanner?] to get into the house where he has Amelia. The code is 500# [a star instead of a pound sign would have been really cool here]. Amelia’s caregiver is Calvin’s mother! So that is what she meant about having to “go underground” in the episode “Closer”. He asks Amelia if she is ready to do some work and says, “How’s my girl today?” [I am thoroughly creeped out by this.]

Pic24

Back at the house, Lucy recognizes Guillermo in the picture from 3-1/2 years ago at a park in New Jersey. She shows Martin the scar. She wants to know why he’s standing behind her daughter 6 months after he killed someone just like Amelia. Which leads us to episode 4 of season 2.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS

See my individual comments to scenes in brackets above. The color red returns. Why red? In Chinese culture, it signifies good fortune and joy. Stars take on more significance. “To Kill A Mockingbird” was the perfect choice for a book. The symbolism in the book of the mockingbird is someone who is innocent and kind but is persecuted. I did an English paper back in grade school on this topic. Clearly, the mockingbirds in TOUCH are the 36 Righteous Ones. It is still unclear if Calvin is a good guy or bad guy or somewhere in between. Why did Guillermo not kill Amelia? Was she still on the path of righteousness and he moved on to another person?

TOUCH (S2E1) “Event Horizon” Recap

12 02 2013

“There are infinite ways to communicate.”

And so begins season 2 of TOUCH. After meeting Amelia’s mom, Lucy, (Maria Bello) at the pier at the end of season 1, Martin (Kiefer Sutherland) and Jake (David Mazouz) begin a new adventure: The Search for Amelia (Saxon Sharbino). Guillermo (Said Taghmaoui), a shadowy figure, kisses the tree of life, a pendant around his neck.

Pic1Guillermo

Martin gets Lucy up to speed. Jake plays with the crystal paperweight he got from his aunt in New York, the aunt who works for the evil Aster Corps. Jake looks at the map of the area. Martin tells Lucy Aster Corps staged Amelia’s death.

Jake stops Lucy to look at his notebook that shows the numbers 24, the next numbers in the sequence. The paperweight lights the spot on the map; 24 is translated also as 2-D.

Pic2

Once at the spot, Jake jumps out of the car and Martin and Lucy follow as Martin says, “Welcome to my world.” They see the hotel sign pointing to room 2-D. The man behind the door is told they are looking for someone. Then they hear a young girl scream who takes the opportunity to jump out of the window. After a scuffle, the guy runs out of the room. He gets into the car, license plate 9NBW742.

Pic3

Martin urges caution to Lucy and convinces her to do things his way. A journalist friend in Los Angeles can help them.

Guillermo is searching for a musician named Frederick LeMay. According to Guillermo, “Some same it’s like hearing the voice of angels” but he never wrote another. The waiter admires his pendant who Guillermo says is “perfection of the universe.” “Each has their own path to God, destiny preordained. It’s a mortal sin to deny it.” The waiter (Anthony Debaeck) is creeped out, especially when Guillermo admires his attire.

Pic 4Waiter

At Aster Corps, Calvin Norburg (Lukas Haas) is having a meltdown. He, too, has the next sequence in the Amelia equation. He wants out of the project and asks his friend, Tony (Adam Campbell) to help him get out of his contract. Calvin tells him that eventually the number will wrap around to the beginning. “This is the God sequence. It’s going to change humanity forever.” He cannot let Aster Corps have it.

Pic5GodSequence

Martin’s friend, Trevor (Greg Ellis), started a news organization similar to Huffington Post called “BreakWire.” Ruben Santiago (Ray Santiago) is their resident hacker who traced the license plate to a private investigator (Kirk B. R. Woller). The PI deposited cash into his bank account the same day he had an appointment with Lawrence J. Pearl (John Prosky), senior partner, of Lesser, Rasmussen and Howe, whose primary client is Aster Corps.

Pic6

Frederick LeMay (Ray Proscia) is making bread. Guillermo turns the sign to “closed” and locks the door. Bread of Life: Meet the Tree of Life. Guillermo puts on the vinyl album. Frederick says from time to time people find him. Guillermo is not just seeking his autograph! He tells Frederick he has quit on God. Time to snuff him out: “You are in HIS way.” After giving him a cut that is similar to Guillermo’s neck wound, he says to a dying Frederick: “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” At the moment of Frederick’s death, Jake lets out a gasp.

Pic7

Jake passes the time playing video games and lands on 5227 every time. Meanwhile Trevor and Lucy play ping pong as Lucy gets background on Martin.

Pic8

Meanwhile, Martin heads to the building where Pearl is to plant a sniffer program for Ruben, posing as a worker and heads to office # 5227. Norburg and Tony ever the elevator with Martin to meet with the law firm.

Pic9

Norburg cannot get out of his contract. Pearl takes a call out in the hallway saying, “You LOST HER?” Martin and Pearl run into each other as Pearl heads back to his office to get a file and Martin is leaving his office. Martin knocks him over and bolts, just missing the elevator down with Calvin and Tony. As Martin passes the car they are in, Calvin opens the door and knocks out the security guy, ensuring Martin’s escape.

Guillermo discovers the sheet music and starts writing numbers for the notes, which, of course, are the God sequence.

Pic11

Santiago finds lots of great information, including an address that Lucy connects to Jake’s scores on all the video machines, a place where they might find Amelia, 5227 Lindera, zip code 90046 [not a real address–bummer].

Pic12

It leads to a crack house and find someone who they think is Amelia. Jakes come into the building. The PI hits Martin. Lucy and the PI search the house. “What is it with you people?” Martin knocks him out. This is not Amelia. While walking outside, Jake drops her backpack and a map falls out. Nicole (Madison Leisle) tells them some girl gave her the backpack near the pier (Amelia). Pearl apparently is her real father. Lucy makes her call home.

Pic13

Norburg loses it as a stakeholder’s meeting. He says they are using this algorithm to program machines to be smarter than people. Then these machines will create new machines who are more intelligent than them. The human brain will become obsolete. It will be a “dystopian nightmare” brought to you by Aster Corps. “Evolution of the species in numerical form.” Tony tells him to prepare for the mother of all lawsuits, but someone in the audience is intrigued. Vikash Nayar (Dileep Rao) approaches. He has money, something Calvin needs, and no questions asked.

Pic14

Guillermo is in a cab and when it jerks, pictures fall out of it, including one of Jake. Jake now has targets on his back, Aster Corps and Guillermo.

Pic15

At the beach, Jake finds a knight chess piece after running and creating a circle in the sand.

Pic16

Pic17

The pattern resembles the tides and the scene shifts over to Amelia who sits at a table. IN WALKS NORBURG who says he heard she went to the beach that day. He tells her, “Your parents gave you away.” A knight piece is missing from her chess set. She is communicating with Jake!

Pic18

Avram’s cousin (Harvey J. Alperin) gives Martin, Lucy and Jake a nice place to stay. Lucy says to Martin, “Nine hours and we’re already leaving together.” A record even for her.

Martin gets a call from Santiago. He discovered a death certificate on Jake, with the date issued blank, that says, “Injuries sustained in a car crash with 1 other fatality, his father, Martin Bohm. Funeral home is undisclosed. The certificate number is S0195520 (not sure if that is significant, but wrote it down anyway).

MY COMMENTS

I like the new changes. There are easter eggs if you look for them. An “aster” in biology is “a cellular structure shaped like a star, formed around each centrosome during mitosis.”  If you look closely, you can see the star references. Another example is on Ruben’s desk. One of the puzzle toys on his desk are like Dr. Teller’s, the ones the boarding house tested Jake, the shape that is identical to the crystal he carries. Also, Ruben is using a screensaver on his computer that is full of stars. There are two stars that are on either side of the address at 5227 Lindera. That swirl pattern is in the gate of the crack house. The star of David on the door to Avram’s cousin’s house.

Jake needed out of the boarding house and to be with Martin as they find more pieces to the puzzle. A Los Angeles shoot provides them with access to more diverse scenery. At this point we are unsure of Calvin Norburg’s true intentions. My gut tells me that Amelia may have been feeding him the sequence and his math skills are what they appear. I 100% believe that Guillermo thinks he is doing God’s work and that is totally creepy. It adds an element of evil and explores the world of religious zealots. Going off the grid will be difficult for Martin. While Clea (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) was a great character to play off, it was something that was getting stale. Lucy and Martin understand each other and complement each other. There is potential for romance between them. Instead of having the “A” plot and “B” plot and Martin never seeing the connection between them, it looks, so far, as if the “A” plot and “B” plot have individualized stories that will eventually meet somewhere down the road. Season 1 was about Martin helping individuals reconnect while discovering what the danger was underneath. The wound Guillermo is creating on the 36 Righteous Ones is similar to the one on his own neck, so I am eager to see this episode with his backstory. This year the danger is brought to the forefront which propels the story forward.

Chatting With Marci Michelle from “TOUCH”

8 02 2013

MarciMichelle1Not only does Marci Michelle Peters-Keirn help other actors learn their lines and sometimes perform their scenes during takes, she also can be found as several different characters in the “24” world, and also in the premiere episode, “Event Horizon” on TOUCH which premieres Friday, February 8, 2013 at 8/7 central on FOX. Look for her in the news staff scenes.

From her website, “Marci Michelle grew up surrounded by the stage and screen. Her grandmother, Charlotte Peters, starred in a variety show from 1947 to 1969 and was dubbed the First Woman of St. Louis Television. Her father, Mike Peters, is a Pulitzer Prize winning editorial cartoonist and creator of the comic strip, Mother Goose & Grimm. Sunday afternoons were regularly devoted to black and white movies and she claims “The Women” as one of her favorite films.

After graduating from Ringling School of Art & Design with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Marci found her way to CA by way of a family friend and immediately fell back in love with being on set and all of the processes of filmmaking. Starting out as a background actor and stand-in, she quickly became a member of the SAG Union and fittingly her first SAG job was as on the movie “Looney Toons: Back In Action” which was endearing to her as the late cartoonist Chuck Jones had been her father’s mentor.”

How did you become a dialogue coach?

I don’t really coach, it’s more of a ‘dialogue consultant’ job and it started back on “24”. That show had copious amounts of scenes where actors were delivering most their dialogue on the phone, on comm, into a walkie, speaker, etc. so instead of figuring out complicated scheduling for actors to come in and deliver their off-camera lines to the actor on camera, it just became easier for me to deliver the lines to them. Especially for Kiefer [Sutherland}. Kiefer had such a heavy load of technical dialogue to get through in every scene that it worked well for us to run the lines thus getting the fast-paced rhythm down. And then, on rare occasion, when he was unavailable, I could deliver his rapid-fire lines to the other actors when they performed on camera.

What are the attributes that make a dialogue consultant outstanding in their field?

From what I have been told by the actors I have worked with, to deliver lines to actors with enough of a “heart-beat” without verbally dictating where the scene should go emotionally seems to be my forte. If, on occasion, an actor asks for the scene to be read with more life I can do that, but most of the time, reading the dialogue with just enough inflection to enable them to make their own artistic choices works best.

What is one memorable moment (a positive memory or a valuable lesson) that you can share with us?

Memorable moment: Kiefer’s uncanny ability to read the nerve level of young actors and instantly and subtly figure out a way of taking their mind off their nerves thus allowing them to give excellent performances. This virtue of his has helped numerous times he has worked in scenes with children especially. He’ll break out coloring books and get down on their level, running the scene with them while keeping them occupied with crayons.

What surprises have you encountered being a dialogue consultant that you did not expect when you entered the industry?

What surprises me and what I adore about my job is seeing the way different actors prepare for their scenes. I’m dyslexic–no joke–so it fascinates me to see the way people memorize anything! Kiefer is an auditory learner. He just needs to hear the words out loud and it locks into that sponge of a brain of his. Some need to run the lines continuously, others need to run them fast just a couple times before a take, and some need lots of props within a scene to play with. Just fascinating.

Besides your parents, who have been great influencers in your life?

Probably my husband of 22 years for being such an incredibly hard worker all the time and my paternal grandmother for being such an outspoken strong woman.

Are there any set differences between working on “24” and working on “TOUCH?”  For example, the pace, the tone, the location, your interaction with the actors or extras in your capacity on set?

The biggest difference between the two series, especially in the first season of “TOUCH” was the pace of the show. Season 2, you will find, picks up pace in a GRAND way. The dialogue is, of course, different as well, not as much technical military vocabulary happening. And the emotional range of where Kiefer’s character, Martin Bohm, has had to go is much broader than that of Jack Bauer I think.

MarciMichelle2

Marci Michelle & Kiefer Sutherland in TOUCH, Season 1, “Safety In Numbers”

The premise of “TOUCH” expands the Chinese legend of the red string of fate of soul mates into a larger theme of tying the destiny of people together. Do you believe in destiny?

I believe in the connectivity of life. I believe that we are connected on a vibrational level and that when you tap into that idea you can see glimmers of those connections.

Do you have your own “TOUCH” story?

You have no idea. SO MANY! Here’s one: When I first moved to Los Angeles I worked as a Massage Therapist. My car had recently gotten broken into, and while finishing up paperwork at the spa I worked in, I was telling the receptionist this crazy story of how when I went to the car dealer to have my CD changer replaced. He told me to head to the parts department. I went over to the parts department and told the man that I needed a new CD changer. He went into the back and said they were out. He said “Write your name down with your number and I’ll call you when it comes in.” I write my maiden name down, Marci Peters. He looks at me and asks “Are you related to Mike and Marian Peters?” I dumbfoundedly replied, “YES?! How would you know that?” He said “I was stationed with your dad in Okinawa. You look like your parents.” I said “So you’ve kept in contact with them?” He replied “Nope. Haven’t talked to them in 30 years!” WHAT!! Now while I’m telling this story to the receptionist, there is a man that I had worked on [therapy], sitting in the lobby of the spa hearing all this, waiting for his wife. He interrupted and said “Your dad is Mike Peters, the cartoonist?” I said, “Yes”, to which he replied, “My sister used to babysit you and your sisters back in Ohio!” I KID YOU NOT!!

Do you believe in karma? Do you have examples from your own life of a positive or negative karmic experience?

Definitely. I’m a pay-it-forward-type person and definitely live my life with much respect to KARMA. My life is proof of positive energy begetting positive energy.

RAPID-FIRE QUESTIONS

I really wish I knew...how to sing better, play the guitar, and speak fluent French.

I’d love to spend a lazy Sunday... with my family watching old black and white movies.

My secret talent is… I’m a book binder, yogi, and massage therapist.

Best spontaneous decision was… moving to LA.

The best advice someone gave you was… to do what I love and the money will follow (my father).

I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to Marci for stopping by today to give us some insight into how things work behind the scenes. Tune in to TOUCH on Friday nights, starting Friday, February 8, 2013 at 8/7 central on FOX.

“TOUCH” Season 2 Premiere Preview

6 02 2013

TouchLogo3

During the last season of TOUCH, we learned that Jake (David Mazouz) is one of the 36 Righteous Ones (Lamed Vav Tzadikim in Judaism mysticism). According to the Talmud, “as a mystical concept, the number 36 is even more intriguing. It is said that at all times there are 36 special people in the world, and that were it not for them, all of them, if even one of them was missing, the world would come to an end.” The sequence Professor Teller was working on he called “The Amelia Sequence” also known as the “mind of God.” We learned that Aster Corps, the corporation that Abigail (Martin’s sister in law) works, is interested in knowing the Amelia sequence for their own greed. (Note: an “aster” is a cellular structure shaped like a star, formed around each centrosome during mitosis, although their corporate logo is not represented by a star which may or may not be an important symbol in the show. I did see several stars during the season 2 premiere episode). Jake was part of their bigger plan. Martin (Kiefer Sutherland) taps into people he helped in season 1 to help him break Jake out of the boarding facility and try to disappear. The numbers lead them to Los Angeles which lead them to finding Amelia’s mother (Maria Bello) at the pier.

TouchJakeKieferMaria

Jake, Martin and Lucy

Last season, TOUCH ran into problems having Jake at a boarding facility (lack of mobility in the world), having Clea (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) as the adult Martin played off of (who was often tied to the boarding facility), and Martin who goes out on these quests for Jake. Clea, being the outsider, took awhile before she began to believe that the numbers Jake was showing the world were significant. Her dialogue lines almost became cliché, like Jack Bauer’s “We’re running out of time.” After a few episodes, while the thought was intriguing about the interconnectedness of everyone, a deeper mythos needed to emerge in order for the show to remain viable. As it was true with the shows “Alias” and “Lost,” TOUCH now moves into that realm.

TOUCH also had an image to get past. Unfortunately, it was not made clear that Jake did NOT have autism. Many media outlets reported it like that, and indeed on Netflix, they still describe season 1 as just that:

TouchNetflixDescription

Even though during the episode, Martin Bohm says that he was diagnosed with many things, including autism, he never bought into any of those diagnoses, but he is curious about Jake’s mutism. Mutism is NOT autism. Because of this, there were strong reactions from families with kids with autism. Having a character with autism is tricky enough. If the creators get it wrong, the backlash is horrible. I cannot tell you how many people have said, “Well, they say the kid has autism but that character is all the misconceptions of autism in one child.” And I have to still correct them. Kiefer Sutherland was on Ellen this past week saying Jake had supernatural abilities and not autism.

At the end of season 1, with the mysticism of the 36 Righteous Ones, coupled with an evil player (Aster Corp), coupled with several unknown characters of good and/or evil, you begin to develop a path where good and evil will collide. TOUCH adds the elements of hidden clues within the episodes that Lost so perfectly executed. Often I have to watch the episodes several times to see the subtle hints, like in this new episode of season 2, “Event Horizon.” It took my second viewing to see the object on the hacker’s desk.

TouchGuillermo

Guillermo Ortiz

While Gugu Mbatha-Raw was a great actress, the chemistry between her character and Martin Bohm could never become romantic. Thus, Maria Bello was added to the cast this season as Amelia’s mother, Lucy Robbins. This gives Martin another parent who understands exactly what he is going through, and gives way to the mission of season 2: Finding Amelia (Saxon Sharbino).

Added to the cast in this episode are Lukas Haas (24, Inception), as Calvin Norburg, who is part of Aster Corps. Actor Said Taghmaoui plays the character Guillermo Ortiz who has his own agenda. Fans of “24” will be pleased to see Greg Ellis (who played Michael Amador in the show “24”) as Jack’s former colleague, Trevor. Ray Santiago joins the cast as the hacker named Ruben Santiago. Dileep Rao (from Inception) joins the show for at least these 2 episodes. The episode also features another “24” and “Fringe” character actor, John Prosky, and “Date Movie” star Adam Campbell.

TouchClavin

Calvin Norburg

The episode of “Closer” was written by Carol Barbee (Jericho, Three Rivers). Everything she touches turns to gold and this episode is no exception. “Event Horizon” was written by Tim Kring. David Eick adds a producing credit and we know the quality we can expect from his productions.

Some people we see in “Closer” are Ayelet Zurer, Linda Gehringer, Randy Oglesby (Argo), John Boyd (of 24 & Argo), Isabella Acres (as Soleil, which means sun, which is the brightest star in our galaxy).

After watching the two episodes, I think the show has improved a great deal. There is an element of danger that was elusive in season 1. Instead of the numbers pushing the path for Martin to find the clues, the numbers serve as markers for Martin and Lucy that they are on the right path. There are other signs given along the way as well. Jake undergoes dramatic character changes. While it is recommended you watch season 1 to understand the base story, a new viewer can easily jump into season 2 with the explanation of important plot points given in the narration and the first episode. There are several targets on Jake’s back so danger is all around and you have to be careful who you trust. The change of location shoot opens up the scenery which is also a refreshing change.  I feel they make a joke within the dialogue:  Lucy:  “Maybe he’s ready for something new.”  Martin:  Aren’t we all?

I wish to thank FOX Broadcasting and the FOX VIP program for allowing me the privilege of the preview.

The special two-hour Season Two premiere episode of TOUCH, “Event Horizon/Closer,” airs Friday, Feb. 8 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. Join us on Twitter for a tweet up.

Touch (S1E7) Noosphere Rising

4 02 2013

(Recap of a season 1 episode in preparation for Season 2 of “Touch” beginning Friday, February 8, 2013)

One has to ask the question, “What is a noosphere?” Loosely defined, it is collective consciousness. Indeed, Jake narrates at the beginning that prayer is a collective request sent up in unison of shared hope. Numbers are a constant until they are not.

Clea (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) reviews the footage of Professor Teller’s (Danny Glover) visit. There is missing time outside of room 6 until he brings Jake (David Mazouz) the car back. Martin (Kiefer Sutherland) asks Jake if Teller gave him anything, and while playing cards, the visitor’s badge and key falls out of the deck with 1188 inscribed. It’s a dead-man’s hand, a poker thing (the show took liberties of making it any suit, but normally it is a two-paired poker hand that consists of black aces and eights along with a “hole” card; this was the hand reportedly held by Wild Bill Hickok before he was shot.

Pic1Key

The B-plot story is about Natalie’s (Amelia Rose Blaire) video blog. Daryl, her boyfriend, broke up with her, but she decided to go to Europe anyway (flight 225). While in Paris, she was ready to go to another country when she finds a red flash drive. She is also wearing red earrings and red shoes. Being an Italian history major, she was able to translate the message on the flash drive to Celeste from Paolo (Alberto Frezza). All he knows is that she is going to be in New York City on March 28 for her birthday and he sends a video message to meet at Cafe Kismet at 7 p.m. This is Natalie’s blog post #1188. This becomes a campaign to find Celeste.

Pic2NatalieBlog

Maggie, Teller’s daughter (Deidrie Henry), and Martin officially meet. She remembers him from the hospital and the funeral. Maggie and Martin talk about Jake, her father’s theories, and that Maggie was his assistant. She was worried about Teller and followed me and he went to a basement on Third and Allan.

Abigail Kelsey (Catherine Dent) goes to visit Jake and gives him her company’s latest computer tablet not yet released to the public. I instantly do not like her.

At the basement, Martin tries the key but it does not work. However, he is told that if he wants “in” it will be $1000. Martin returns with it which buys him into a poker game and he meets Stacey (Angela Gots), the dealer.

Meanwhile in Australia, a father leaves 1188 hectares of Groton Valley Station to his son, Devon Michael Jones (Sean McGowan). But he has to ride his horse, Zeus, first. Devon is a math professor In New Jersey (with Logan, see below). Eventually Zeus lets him ride him once Devon has broken down about his feelings about his father. He gives the ranch to Zeke (Robert Pike Daniel), his father’s friend.

Natalie is shocked at the 20,521 video responses. Among those are the Happy Pop Twins (remember them? Our Japanese travelers, Miyoko (May Miata) and Izumi (Satomi Okuno) from earlier episodes). And through them, Natalie has found a new band to like, “The Morticians.” Natalie suggests that they should all meet there for Paolo in case Celeste does not show to support him. Everything should wear the color red. It’s the “I Believe in Love” Team.

Pic3HappyPopTwins

Clea shows Jake how he can use the icons on the device to speak. Instead, he goes to a solitaire game (where we see 2 aces and 2 eights).

Pic4Solitaire

Martin plays poker. Stacey asks him if he is “another math guy.” Martin has aces and eights but loses. When cashing out an opposing player, on the $200 mark, there is a $20 that says Logan loves Stacey; Martin follows her outside. Professor Logan Coteweiler (Eyal Podell) is a math professor. He won $200,000 in week 6 of his experiment. The house thinks she was in on it so she has to pay it off.

Pic5LoganLovesStacey

Back at Stanford House, Abigail informs Clea and Martin that she has filed to be Jake’s legal guardian. Jake is looking at an article written by Dr. Logan Coteweiler on 1188. Abigail is trying to buy her way inside by offering tablets to all the children with special needs at the school. She informs Clea she has come back “to protect him.”

Pic6LogansArticle

Martin finds Logan on the floor. After calling 9/11, he finds his cell and calls this “Devon” person. Devon informs Martin that Logan is diabetic and his insulin is in the refrigerator. He starts waking up.

Celeste has been found “sort of.” A picture of her was located on a cell phone circling the globe (see episode 1).

Pic7CellPhone

Logan loves Stacey. He was using Teller’s Amelia sequence, which he calls it like the mind of God, which turns Schrödinger equation, which is a partial differential equation that express how the quantum state of some physical systems change with time. The Amelia sequence ties the past and the present and the future together. Martin tells him what happened to Stacey. In order for Martin to find where the key fits, Logan tells Martin he has to buy into a high-stakes poker game to win the money to get Stacey out of trouble. Logan tells Martin to follow his cues, but Martin listens to his own and wins on aces and eights.

Logan gives the money back to Stacey at Cafe Kismet. Martin receives change of a $20 and it is the bill that says Logan loves Stacey on it. She is not ready to talk to him about that. He tells Martin that the red door will lead him to Teller’s research.

Pic8CafeKismet

Natalie is also outside Cafe Kismet where Martin walks across her video screen. Natalie is overwhelmed by the response and the people who came. Paolo is there, but he is not looking any longer for Celeste; he is there for Natalie. GOOSEBUMPS! I’m such a sucker for love.

Pic9PaoloNatalie

Stacey eventually meets with Logan at Cafe Kismet. Celeste found her true love. Natalie and Paolo spend time together. Clea sees the picture of Amelia on the missing video footage.

Pic11Amelia

And Martin finds the door that the 1188 key opens. He adds to the sequence, but FLICK FLUB, he forgets to put a “6” after the 975 and before the 1188.

Touch (S1E6) Lost and Found Recap

4 02 2013

(Getting caught up on my recaps for the Season 2 start to Touch on Friday, February 8, 2013)

This was one of my favorite episodes as it signaled a turning point. Clea (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) moved past being the nagging person who admonished Martin (Kiefer Sutherland) for not being the parent he needed to be in order to keep custody of Jake (David Mazouz). Mystery begins to develop around “The Amelia Sequence.” Is Teller on to something or is it simply a brain event linked to an aneurysm or stroke? I have a brain aneurysm and have never had anything like that before. Who is Amelia? Who are the people who belong to the group that Teller keeps referring to as “them?” But most of all, it had one of my favorite actresses from Fringe, Michelle Krusiec, who granted me an interview.

Now onto the show itself: During the narration, Jake refers to the North Star, Polaris, as our anchor. It is at 89 degrees, 15 minutes and 50.8 seconds. It is a constant, a fixed point.

Opening sequence: A woman gets a phone call with obvious bad news and looks over at a couple with a baby. A man looks at “Lamont Properties/Queens Plaza North” on his computer. A couple reports a missing son. Clea stands on a bridge where a train rushes by. Martin wakes up from a dream of a smiling, happy Jake who jumps off a swing and into his arms only to see Jake standing over him. Jake is playing with a red car.

JakeRedCar

While reviewing Jake’s case with center-director Sheri (Roxana Brusso), Clea gets a call that her mom (Carlease Burke) is in Victory Hospital. Teller asks Martin for the numbers Jake has given him thus far. Martin starts, “3, 18, 52, 96…” and Teller finishes, “32, 87, 95, 22, 975.” It’s apparently “The Amelia Sequence.” It connects everything with everyone. Teller explains that he was told he had an aneurysm but he disagrees. He would like to see Jake that day. Martin says no, but Teller finds his old visitor’s pass to Stanford House.

AmeliaSequence

Lanny Zheng (Michelle Krusiec) is at the airport and sits next to the Lamont Properties guy, Will Davies (David Julian Hirsh). She is booked on Pan Horizon Airways from JFK to Omaha at gate 77, Flight 975. He is on stand-by.

WillLanny

Lannyticket

Martin brings a lost bag from JFK to the home of the missing boy, Andy. His dad, Mr. McNichols, (Diego Serrano) looks down at Andy’s red tricycle.

RedTricycle

Clea goes to the hospital to see her mom; it’s been 6 years since she has. Clea’s mom is schizophrenic and does not recognize Clea. She takes about another child, “My baby’s at home” and the woman runs out.

CleaMom

At the Stanford House, Teller (Danny Glover) says he is there for a consult to get past the front desk to covertly see Jake. Jake is painting the numbers 975 on his easel and Jake has been expecting Professor Teller.

PaintedNumbers

The police officer said that the mom was trying to steal cough medicine. Clea says her mother tried to take a child from a playground a few years ago. Martin walks in with a delivery for Dr. Williams. Clea is surprised to see him. They overhear news reports about Andy being missing. He was wearing a red baseball cap and has a cold.

CleaMartinHospital

Will is questioning his purpose today. He says he feels guilty for telling his bosses about some great real estate property, a famous building they are now tearing down to put up a skyscraper. He asks Lanny if she has ever wondered that. Lanny replies that her parents would say that it is procreation, carrying on the family name. TSA asks Lanny to come with them as her luggage went missing. Will apparently takes the seat she will no longer occupy. Before that happens though, he gives her his business card and writes on the back of it, “I O U.”

IOU

Toy cars apparently were Amelia’s favorite things. You hear Sheri come in and say, “Teller is here!” The next number in the sequence is “6.”

9756

At the hospital, Martin gets an Amber Alert on his phone, which is case #975, for Andy. Martin convinces Clea to trust him. They are going to have to find the mother and Andy themselves.

AmberAlert

Will wakes up in a field, attached to an airplane seat. The plane has crashed and he is apparently the only survivor. He takes his briefcase and starts walking, all the way back to his office. In a few hours, the old building will be blown up.

SoleSurvivor

Lanny goes home to her partner, Serena (Camille Chen), and she is consulting a medium named “George” (Boyuen). Lanny asks why the medium is there. None of Serena’s embryos were viable. The medium said one of their dead ancestors was upset. Lanny thinks it is a pile of BS.

SerenaGeorge

Using a map, Martin wanted Clea to point to where her mom used to go. Some backstory on Clea emerges: She was only 8 when she was taken from social services from her mom. She recognizes Queensboro Plaza. Clea tells Martin of a woman who got hit by a car there who had her mother’s cell phone. Martin says he witnessed that accident.

Teller goes to door 6, the one Jake was hanging around in a previous episode, thinking Amelia is there; however, he thinks he sees her in the hallway in a wheelchair connected to an IV. Teller is discovered. He accuses Sheri of being “part of it.” He asks her if she was promises money and fame” as he was.

AmeliainWheelchair

Clea remembers her mother screaming on the tracks to try to silence the voices in her head. She spots a star made in concrete that her mom drew as a roadmap in case she ever got lost (reference to the north star that Jake narrates at the beginning). It serves to jog Clea’s memory and another landmark jogs another memory. Clea remembers the crest of the building. They find out the place is going to be blown up for a demolition drop in 10 minutes.

Star

Teller gets into his car. It won’t turn over and he begins to see 9, 7, 5, 6 on his odometer and then sees all the numbers in a euphoric-like moment.

Odometer

Will goes to his boss, Lamont (Matt McCoy). He said they go into the poorest neighborhoods, drive down the prices, and then pave it all over. What they do is wrong. The building should have been a museum since all the jazz greats were there. He is not going to let that happen. He told his boss he had to do something that mattered TODAY. Then he turns around and walks out with blood drops dotting his trail. His boss does see it. Will arrives to the scene about the same time Clea and Martin do. He runs to the building.

Blood

Lanny talks to Serena about her true feelings about having kids right now. Serena tells her she cannot wait much longer. Lanny’s cell phone keeps ringing. When she finally does answer, it is someone inquiring if she was on the flight that crashed.

LannyCrashTV

Clea and Martin search and find her mother. Talking to her mother about memories of their time in that building helps her mom remember just for a time. She lost Andy. She had taken him to a park. Clea thanks Will for saving his mother’s life. Martin goes running off to the park. The foreman sees Will is bleeding, but it is too late for him; he collapses and dies. Clea sees his ticket for flight 975.

WillBoardingPass

Martin hears the squeaking sound similar to his dream about Jake coming from the red swing seat at the park. Then he hears Andy’s coughing. The dream now makes sense to him.

Park

Serena thanks the spirits. Lanny changes her mind about children after this near-death experience. Lanny points out that they could use her eggs. Serena says because Lanny was born in the Year of the Dragon, they need to pair her with a snake. The picture from NuLife Fertility Clinic is that of our friend, Will, and she takes out the card he gave to her. It looks like she believes in fate by the end.

WillFertilityClinic

Clea believes in Jake’s abilities now. She tells Martin he is a great father. Martin looks at the book and sees that Jake has added a 6. People run down the hall and out to the parking garage and Martin and Clea follow. Teller is dead.

Touch (S1E5) Entanglement Recap

3 02 2013

(Late recapping, but prepping for new season starting on Friday, February 8, 2013)

Opening scenes: A Muslim girl (actress Emily Ghamrawi) watches as her father arranges her marriage. She takes off her burqa and we see that she is a fan of “The Morticians.” A pickpocket (actor Ron Yuan) in New York lifts a wallet off a man, but returns it to him when he sees the man’s daughter’s picture. A man (actor Amir Talai) in Montreal subway watches a young lady reading, “Les Filles” (actress Sabrena No’mani). They get off at the Champs-des-Mars metro station (which was created in 1966–1+9+6+6=22). A young lady lights a candle in a church (actress Zuleyka Silver).

At a restaurant, Clea (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), Martin (Kiefer Sutherland) and Jake (David Mazouz) have breakfast before the big evaluation that is to take place that day. At the sound of Abigail’s name (Sarah’s sister), Jake gets agitated. Martin wants to know how Abigail found out that Jake was at the center as it had only been 1 week. Jake draws a pattern with sugar packets and pours maple syrup in his hand which he leaves an imprint of on the glass as he leaves the restaurant with Clea.

Martin goes to visit Professor Teller (Danny Glover). He talks about “The Golden Ratio.” At the beginning of the voice over, Jake is talking about the DNA of life, so I looked specifically for the any references to that to this mathematical equation: “Several researchers have proposed connections between the golden ratio and the human genome DNA.” Teller tells Martin the number that Jake wants him to follow is 22.

It also talks about the Fibonacci sequence which was something mentioned in earlier episodes.

Norah disguises herself as a boy to go driving and picks up her female friend. They run into a woman in the desert about to give birth. They pick her up and the plan is to take her to a hospital, but the car breaks down.

Teller is acting strangely. He goes to see his daughter, Maggie, (Deidrie Henry) who works at Victory Hospital. Teller thinks he is nearing the next set of numbers in the sequence. He says, “They don’t know I found the boy.” Who are they? Maggie wants his to see the neurologist, Dr. Bennett.

At Centre Hospital, Sami is ready to meet the girl on the train at 8:00 that night. It is his last day at work. His supervisor tells him that he needs to get on the computer and find a bone marrow donor match for Gabriel who was adopted as he was just diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.

The picketpocket lifts Martin’s computer as Martin’s food tumbles out of the bag. Martin gives chase. The man jumps onto Bus 22. The pickpocket gets off before Martin can reach him. Martin sits next to the young lady from the church sequence. Martin sees Jake’s pattern on the logo for Hudson University (a common fictional university for many TV shows) that she possesses. She pulls a gun on Martin and says this will be over in 5 stops. Clea tries to call Martin because he is late for the evaluation but it goes to voicemail. The girl on the bus points to the man she wants to kill because he killed her villagers including her mother, father and brother.

The pickpocket meets up with his daughter and gives her Martin’s computer for her birthday. However, she gets a new car from her stepfather. The pickpocket arranges to have an impromptu Chinese dragon parade for his daughter because that memory is special to her.

The woman who is in labor calls her husband who happens to be in New York. The call distracts him and he steps into the path of Bus 22. For a moment the gun is jarred free from Marisol’s hands. Martin grabs the man and gets him off the bus, but Marisol follows. They wind up in an alley. This is where Martin sees Exodus 22:22 on his chest. (Exodus 22:21-22 says, “You shall not wrong any widow or orphan. If ever you wrong them and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry.” ) Martin tries to talk Marisol out of this.

Exodus22

Fireworks from the parade distract Marisol. The man pushes Martin out of the way and runs towards his hotel. Marisol follows and gets hit by a delivery truck.

Out in the desert, instead of her brother coming out to meet them, Norah’s father gets out of the car. He waits outside the car while his daughter helps the woman give birth to a baby girl.

At Victory Hospital, Martin sees the Chapel notice saying that they were talking about Exodus this month. He looks up the passage in Exodus. Martin goes back to the hotel to get the story from the man. It was war. He and a group of individuals did kill the father, but they could not kill the brother. The children were sent to Canada. Ah, now it’s coming all together for me. Marisol is going to be the match for her brother in Canada. Martin talks to Maggie at the hospital (not realizing it is Teller’s daughter) and see Jake’s pattern on the bone marrow donor request. Martin puts the pieces together. Since the doctor finds the donor match he has a few minutes to get himself to train station to meet the girl of his dreams. He goes to find his metro ticket and realizes it is not his bag. Thinking his chance to meet her is over, he ascends back up the rainy street and, boom, runs into her.

They want to ship Jake to Rhode Island. The young man who Norah was to marry happens to be Sami, the doctor in Montreal, whose father embarrassingly has to tell Norah’s father met someone and he had to hear about it on the internet. Norah looks it up and sees “Missed the train…met the girl.”

The package Abigail sent to Jake included several toys and a cassette tape Sarah recorded for Jake with her singing on it for the nights when she might not make it home. Marisol and Gabriel meet up again in the hospital in Canada. Norah’s father leaves her pamphlets for ICNY (International College of New York) to let her have a different destiny.

Touch Season 1 Episode 4 “Kite Strings”

30 01 2013

(I got behind in the spring on these recaps. With Touch returning Friday, February 8, I thought I’d catch up).

Martin (Kiefer Sutherland) receives a letter from the chief medical examiner presumably about his wife’s remains at the World Trade Center. He looks over at the red kite, picks it up and leaves.

The newspaper says that the TriState Lotto winner was costing them $140,625 a week having not claimed the prize. He won $190 million. (I should be an editor–if you look closely enough you’ll see that the newspaper article repeats twice).

Flash to the First Congregational Church of Lynchburg where Randall Meade (Titus Welliver) reads the marquee, “You have questions? He has answers.”

Jake (David Mazouz) is narrating in the background that we are always waiting for messages. He poses that if we have not received a message, it might be because we haven’t listened hard enough.

At the center, Martin tells Clea (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) said that they have not yet identified his wife’s remains (Fact: 40% of the victims in the WTC have never been identified). Martin regrets not being there for Sarah and Jake because he thought he had all the time in the world. He wants to take Jake to the cemetery and Clea approves. Jake runs to Bobby Aresa (Kiko Ellsworth) at Sarah’s grave with his kite in hand. Bobby was a bike messenger and knew Sarah from the WTC and they became friends. Sarah Bohm was born on 4/3/1970. (I don’t know if that is significant but thought I would write it down). Jake looks down at his dropped red book with combinations of 9-5 with varying decimal points.

Notebook

Martin looks as the clock on his cell phone changes to 9:50. Jake releases the kite. Jake is wearing a red shirt, too. Jake and Martin follow the kite. Eventually they come to an intersection where we see “checks cashed 9.5%“. Jake crosses the street.

All the way around the globe in Iraq, we see Tarik (Wesam Keesh) and Abdul (Shak Ghacha) who we have met in previous episodes. Band practice is at 9:50 p.m. The US soldiers hire them to play at the base. Abdul excitedly lets First Lt. Laura Davis (Sprague Grayden) know when her convoy follows.

Back in Lynchburg, Randall Meade observes a very unconfident preacher. He tells the congregation to open to Luke 9 chapter 5. “And as for those who do not welcome you, when you leave that town, shake the dust from your feet in testimony against them.” In historical context, the passage is about when armed with the power and authority that Jesus himself had been displaying, the 12 disciples are now sent out to continue the work that Jesus had been performing throughout Gallean ministry. Randall tells Pastor Steve (Josiah Early) that “he has answers” is a bunch of crap.

There is an ad on a subway sign that says Citrus O has only 270 calories and is 99.5 degrees in the shade.

Another sign says, “Construction on Ninth Street; expect a half-hour delay.”

Jake walks into the apartment building to door “65” that turns into “95” after a ball hits the door at the precise moment he is there. It’s Bobby from the cemetery. Martin asks him if 9.5 or 9-1/2 means anything to him.

DoorNumber

Jake walks into the apartment. Bobby’s daughter’s name is Sarah.

Sarah

In Iraq, the two military vehicles get hit by IEDs and the soldiers are under fire. An injured Laura pulls a squadmate out of the vehicle and gets away from the scene.

Laura

Jake seems attracted to the red roses on the table as Bobby shares his memory of Sarah with Martin. He knew that the WTC would come down as he felt the instructions to go back into the offices was wrong. He has been feeling guilty for not going after Sarah.

Roses

Pastor Steve shares how the church has stayed in the family and the plans his father had for expansion. He tells Randall that he had plans to go up to New York and follow his girlfriend (which turns out to be Laura). Randall shares his story about what happened with Sarah. He also shares about his background in construction work growing up. Steve asks him if he could look at something in the basement. As they walk down the stairs, they fall in and get locked in.

Tarik’s band, Deep Lightning, is using an amp, a RichterVox Model 95-A, but they want to make sure they don’t exceed the safety level of volts.

RichterVox

In the background is a poster of Andrew James who is a famous bass player. (Yes, I notice this stuff).

They ask King Roadie (Joshua Leonard) who types in 50 volts. King Roadie apparently keeps his old instruction sets in a red suitcase.

50volts

The soldiers are asked to give their sit-rep 9-5. They still cannot locate the two injured soldiers.

Jake goes into a room in Bobby’s apartment, locks the door and climbs out to the fire escape. He goes after the red kite. King Roadie’s girlfriend is startled by Jake at the window (Jake had changed the satellite signal where the red kite was caught). The girlfriend falls back, a pen drops on the keyboard and 50 volts gets changed to 950 volts.

950volts

Jake reaches for the kite. Martin realizes that Jake wants Bobby to help him get it. Bobby catches Jake before he falls. Martin tells him that in saving Jake, his debt he felt to Sarah was repaid.

BobbyJake

Over in Iraq, 950 volts makes for quite a light display and it lights up a particular transformer where the two soldiers are. Their coordinates were 3-0-9-5. (Look in the right corner of my screen. There are 9:59 minutes left of the show–LOL).

Green

Bobby remembered how 9-5 was significant in his life with Sarah. It was the last session with Sarah. Sarah was tutoring him to help him get his GED so he could better provide for his family.

Pastor Steve talks to Laura who is not sure if she will make it, but wanted him to know that something he said to her helped save her squadmate. He tells Laura he has been given a sign to move on with his life. He plans to go to Germany to be with her. Randall thinks his question has been answered, too.

LauraBeforeSurgery

Back at the apartment, Martin looks in Sarah’s appointment book where he sees B.A. (Bobby Aresa) in her 9/5/2001 appointments. He also finds a receipt to Thomas Brothers Jewelry. He goes there. They held onto the wedding ring that belonged to Sarah. She was having it engraved with 1 + 1 = 3.
