American Idol Season 13 Salt Lake City

8 02 2014

LogoThe next city in the tour is Salt Lake City where 30 talented individuals received a golden ticket to Hollywood.

Radioactive is a really bad song choice with which to audition. Austin Wolfe, a 16-year-old student from Park City, Utah got some of the lyrics wrong. Her voice is nice, but I don’t like the song choice. She is through.

In the first group montage, lumberjack Kylee Adamson, age 18, from Salem, UT has a lovely voice and she is through. Michael Simeon, 19, student, from Lumberton, MS (there is a “lumbar” theme going on here) sings but his voice does not match his face. I loved it. Tessa Norman, a 19-year-old student from Lindon, UT has a pretty smile but an average voice. Jennifer thinks she is going to be a star. Really? I don’t see it.

Samantha Townsend, a 22-year-old nursing assistant from Layton, UT, sounded horrible. Could it get any more nasal? It almost sounds like someone singing with a sinus infection.

I love, love (did I say love) Alex Preston, a 20-year-old student) from Mont Vernon, NH. He sings an original. HE is original. The judges gave him three yeses but they were also impressed with his song.

Fanny-pack Samantha Calmes, is a 25-year-old musical educator, from Hammond, LA. She sings an original song. I am not sure what I make of it. She is interesting. The song sounded more like poetry slam. When Harry asks her to sing something else, she chooses the theme song from The Jefferson’s. I will definitely remember her in Hollywood week.

Next are four contestants from the Idol bus tour. Lebryant Crew, age 24, a real estate manager from El Dorado, AR. He is a minister too. Did he wink at Jennifer or was that Harry? Laurel Wright, age 18, a student from Maryville, TN was next. I loved her quiet voice. They need a folk singer sound in the competition. DJ Bradley, age 20, is unemployed, also from Maryville, TN. He reminds the judges he is not Ed Sheeran (although it does look like him). He is interesting. He is not the best voice in the competition but definitely interesting. I enjoyed the falsetto. He has this quirky vibe and I love quirky. Jennifer is a yes, but what about Harry or Keith? And for a #IdolHollywood or #IdolHome, they ask the audience about Julie Offill. Sixty-seven percent said Hollywood and 33% said home. Keith is a no, but the others are a yes. All the bus tour contestants are through.

Kenzie Hall is a 16-year-old student from Draper, UT. She has a very interesting voice. Three yeses.

Paisley Van Patten is a 25-year-old waitress from Salt Lake City, had a record deal but it crashed because of her addiction. Her fiancé said that if she tried out for American Idol he was not going to remain being engaged. I loved her voice. She receives three yeses.

Emily Rottler was amazing and she is through. She is a 17-year-old student from Salt Lake City.

Dexter Roberts works at “BBFF.” He says it stands for, “Bang, Bang, Flop, Flop” and Keith pipes in “…speaking of Harry’s concerts.” He is a dog trainer, farm hand from Fayette, AL. I liked his voice and he is interesting. Harry thinks it sounded authentic. He gets three yeses.

Ally Roundy is nice, but I did not think she was good enough. Keith thinks this 18-year-old student from Sandy, UT needs a little more time. Jennifer disagrees. Harry said he likes the concept of a diamond in the rough but there was too much rough. She is going home.

Briston Maroney‘s great great grandfather was a recording artist in Nashville. His guitar was passed down and is now Briston’s. But then later he says great grandfather so I think it is more great grandfather. This 15-year-old student from Knoxville, TN has a strange voice but one I would remember. It was very nasal. I am not sure about him–maybe in a few more years. Jennifer said he had a unique voice. Keith says he has a very affected style of singing and is hoping other colors will come out without losing the whole sound. Harry is worried he is going to lose his voice, but he is through to Hollywood.

The next three are in a group. Leia “Fish” Lotulelei, 19, student, Des Moines, WA. I liked the nice falsetto. But we have heard a lot of unique voices. Is his unique enough? Three yeses for him. Sabrina Lentini, 15, student, Tustin, CA has a nice voice. Yes from the judges but she confides that Harry said no. She only needs two. Carson Henline, 16, student, Gunnison, UT, has a powerful but immature voice. It is a no from the judges.

Johnny Newcomb, a 16-year-old student from Tennessee, did a pretty good job. He has an interesting voice although he missed a note or two. Harry thinks Johnny is imitating his idol rather than finding his own. Keith said sometimes people will pull in several elements of different people instead of just one. Jennifer lets him sing one more to get them to change their minds. I would have said yes to him. Jennifer said yes. Harry says no because he does not think he is ready yet. Keith said yes. Jennifer tells him he has to bring the feeling with him to Hollywood. It is not enough just to bring the voice.

Then there is some comic relief between the judges. Harry says if his dentist looked like Jennifer he would eat a box of Oreos just to have her clean his teeth.

Trained in opera, Kimberly Tosti, a 25-year-old marketing coordinator from Park City, UT, gave her best effort. I trained in opera too. It doesn’t mean I could call myself an opera singer. But unfortunately she really cannot sing well. It is a no from all of them.

During a judges’ interview, they wanted to know what was the best advice their parents ever gave. Jennifer said her mother told her “don’t be a baby.” Apparently on her first job she was the only one without a solo. Her mother said, “That’s the business you chose and you better toughen up.”

Carmen Delgina, age 24, is a resale clerk from Las Vegas, NV. Her father is Wonder Mike from the Sugar Hill Gang. It was a bad song choice. I think she has a voice in there but it was sort in and out of different keys by trying to do too many runs. Harry does not think her vocals are strong enough to get her to the end. Jennifer felt she has a God-given voice but it was inconsistent. Keith felt something was disconnecting this beautiful voice with her delivery. Three yeses? I’m shocked. Jennifer thinks she needs to practice.

Next up is Kassandra Castaneda, age 16, a student from Eastvale, CA. Her speaking voice and singing voice are very different. Her uncle gave her his number to give to Jennifer. How funny. I think her voice is better than Carmen but still was average. Harry was not impressed. Jennifer thought it was worthy of going to Hollywood. Keith hears what both Harry and Jennifer are saying and thinks her raw talent could blossom out in Hollywood. He says yes.

Kenneth “Woodie” Gaddie, age 28, substitute teacher, from Maumelle, AR. He has a beautiful voice and is through to Hollywood.

Casey Thrasher is living with his aunt with his two children in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He chooses a song because of an experience he had with Keith. Harry chimes in, “Should we leave?” Keith took a picture with him at the gate of the CMA’s. Keith looks moved that he had that effect but I think Keith is also worried this guy may suck and he would hate that. Jennifer is moved by his emotion. She said it wasn’t 100% perfect but there was feeling and a real voice there. Harry said his drive is strong. Keith said he felt the hunger, drive and desperation to be able to just get a break. Casey gets emotional upon hearing that from him. Three yeses.

At this point, there have been 193 tickets given out, including the 30 given in Salt Lake City.

Last stop: Omaha–Where I lived for 4 years.

American Idol Season 13 Atlanta Auditions

4 02 2014

LogoThat was such a cute opening with Ryan Seacrest and his mom. And changes already? Can Harry Connick, Jr. judge just as well from the left of the panel as on the right? Time will tell.

Majesty Rose has a name that sounds already like a star. She is a 21-year-old preschool teacher from Goldsboro, North Carolina. I loved her. I had goosebumps. It was very quiet but beautiful. Harry thought it was elegant in a refreshing way. Jennifer said it was effortless. Keith said she pulled him in. Going to Hollywood.

Jesse Cline, a 19-year-old gas station attendant from Ashland, Kentucky, drove straight through to the audition. I was very surprised. I wasn’t expecting that voice. Harry said to Keith that he was the ultimate Cinderella. I loved it. He is through to Hollywood.

Alyson Ragona with pink hair and a ukulele is a 19-year-old sales associate from Eldridge, Iowa and a definite no for me. She was a no for the judges, too.

Chris Medina? No, not THAT Chris Medina from 2011. And his dog, Bubbie? Harry adopts the dog. He is a 23-year-old in the Army National Guard. I was not sure at first, but then I perked up. Harry: “I believe I have a wet spot on my pants.” Chris: “From the DOG???” Harry: “No…dog’s been great. This is a personal matter.” I was laughing so hard. There are three yeses for Chris but Harry keeps the dog. What? He wants to shed the Harsh Harry image? What “Harsh Harry” image? He tells Chris to bring the dog to Hollywood. Chris says he isn’t sure that is allowed but if the dog is then he will.

Next collage of two individuals: Kristen O’Connor, a 24-year-old nurse tech from Sebastian, Florida. She had a beautiful voice. Emily Piriz is a 17-year-old student from Orlando, Florida. I liked it. Both are given yeses to Hollywood.

Ben Briley, nicknamed Brother Gumbo by the judges, is a 24-year-old server from Gallatin, Tennessee. His voice is nice but I do not like country music. I thought it was odd because he brought a guitar but then did not use it. Three yeses.

Nica Nashae, a 24-year-old student from Milledgeville, Georgia has a nice voice, but will I remember her? I don’t know. Three yeses

Jordan Brisbane says he has what it takes to shut the American Idol series down. Oh boy. This is not going to end well. He is an adorable 15-year-old student and cook from Savannah, Georgia, but a singer? I hope he cooks better than he sings. But he gets three yeses.

Sam Burchfield, a 21-year-old student, from Athens, Georgia made me smile and laugh. It is a yes for me. Jennifer thought it was original. Keith loved the voice. Harry thought there was a weird impediment and votes no, but he is through to Hollywood.

Endless jokes are made about Slapout, Alabama, but Jessica Meuse, a 22-year-old student, proves she is just as unique as the name of the town. She has this gritty rocker sound with her original song. I loved her. The right shoulder is a bit annoying and distracting, but hopeful she can work that out. Three yeses.

For the segment of #IdolHollywood or #IdolHome on Twitter, I felt this contestant was more suited towards Broadway. Fifty-three percent thought Hollywood and 47% thought home.

I hope Travis Hunter-Brown, a 26-year-old barista from St. Petersburg, Florida makes better coffee.

Jennifer got goosies with this Lauren Ogburn‘s performance. I thought it was a good singing voice for pleasure but not for Idol. She is a 19-year-old receptionist from Lake City, Florida. She gets three yeses, but Harry tells her to tone down the dressing statement.

This year marks the return of two season 11 contestants, Caleb Johnson from Asheville, NC, and Neco Starr from Atlanta. I like both their voices. Three yeses for Caleb. Two yeses from the boys for Neco.

There are so many people who can wear purple lipstick and I am envious of Bria Anai, a 15-year-old student from Lithonia, Georgia. She calls her stage mom her “mom-ager” and Harry quips, “You should meet her da-gent.!” Harry is just so funny. I had goosebumps from her voice in 3 seconds. Jennifer thought it was amazing. Harry thought it was impossible. Three yeses.

Forty-four people got tickets in Atlanta plus the 119 from other auditions brings the total thus far to 163 golden tickets.

Next up: Salt Lake City

American Idol Season 13 Detroit Auditions

29 01 2014

One of the best things Idol has done was to go to Detroit for one of their audition cities. We all know about it being the birth of the Motown sound, but they have suffered more than most American cities with the recession. Not only did it bring some much needed revenue into the city, but it also showcased some wonderful talent.

I think Radioactive is just a bad song with which to audition. Fortunately for 24-year-old Keri Lynn Roche, the judges asked her to sing a different song. She slayed it. She should lose the guitar. The judges said absolutely yes.

Julian Miller is an 18-year-old shoe salesman from Detroit. He was excellent and is through to the next round.

Paris Primeau is a 16-year-old student from Macomb, Michigan. I thought she was quite unique. Keith did not like her theatrics, but she is through to the next round.

My first thought about Samantha Furtwengler was that she would need to change her name if she becomes famous. (Sorry I don’t mean to make fun of people’s names but this one just doesn’t roll off the tongue very easily). I am iffy on her voice. She received a no. When she returns to the lobby, her sister (I think) looked shocked like “how is that possible? Am I being punked?”

I loved Olivia Diamond, a 22-year-old student from Detroit. She is through to the next round.

Tuba-player Malaya Watson is adorable. She is a 15-year-old student at Southfield High School in Michigan. I was amazed by the control in this young one’s voice. I had goosebumps (the first of the night). Jennifer felt that God gave her something so pure and real and special. Welcome to Hollywood.

This is the last shot for Bryan Watt, a 29-year-old, nonprofit director from Thomasville, Georgia. Another goosebump-maker. Harry said it was competent, patient and an easy performance. They jokingly referred to him as Superman because he looks like the actor. He was instructed to bring his cape to Hollywood (and cue the song from Daughtry).

I don’t like Khristian D’avis‘ voice. She is a 22-year-old server from Chicago. She has a band. I do not think she was good enough. She was going in and out of different keys. Keith said it was dynamically inconsistent and her pitch was shaky in spots. Jennifer said that her style came from her lack of ability to hold notes. Harry said it was funny how she lost her accent that she had at the beginning of the audition in just the last 3 seconds. Jennifer noticed that, too. Jennifer says yes; Keith says no. Harry gives her another chance with a warning to figure out what is real and what is fake. After she left the audition they start to talk. Keith said he got upset when she did not listen to the great advice she was getting and she was not even trying to learn.

I was not impressed with Jena Asciutto‘s performance with Rolling in the Deep. She has this weird thing she does on some of her notes that was just plain annoying. It is not the level of quality we have seen with other contestants. Harry notices that her tongue closes off her throat at times (this must be what is causing that annoying sound). Keith loved it. Jennifer likes when a song does not sound like the original singer. She gets three yeses.

Dam Dinh, Antonio Brown, and Chaz Coley are all no’s.

Her father toured during her young years but he gave up his dreams to give her a good life. Melanie Porras, age 19, an administrative assistant from Kennesaw, Georgia, now follows in her father’s footsteps. I like her. The song did not show a lot of range though. She reminded me a little bit of Hayley Reinhart. Jennifer thought she played it safe and asked her to do another song. She chose “Dead or Alive” by Bon Jovi. I thought that was a much, much better choice for her. Keith, too, thought it was way better. It proves that song choice is CRUCIAL! She gets three yeses.

Then we had some hilarity with the judges. Jennifer excused herself to go to the bathroom and Harry auditioned for Keith. Harry botched his performance on the Star Spangled Banner but Keith was still going to give him a golden ticket.

Harry must have loved the next contestant, Liam Newberry, an 18-year-old student from Chagrin Falls, Ohio, because he loves Harry’s music. He sang a Frank Sinatra song without the Sinatra in it. He has a nice voice but there was no soul in it. It is a sound we haven’t heard yet within the competition this year, but it is just not good enough. Maybe he was nervous. Jennifer said it did not have any swag. Keith thinks the sexiness of the genre was not there. Harry tells him to forget everything he learned in musical theater. He told him to find the emotion. Liam tries to convince him if they give him another chance he could do that right then. They hand him three no’s.

I liked Jade Lathan, a 20-year-old student from Monroe, Michigan. She performs an Amy Winehouse song. She did great. Harry thinks she is adorable. It was “absolutely yes” from the three judges.

Keith played guitar for Jared White. From what I heard, he sounded really good. He is through to Hollywood.

Sarah Scherb, age 19, a student from Birmingham, Michigan. There is something about her tone I did not like. Maybe it was too nasal. But she has three yeses and is through to Hollywood.

Sydney Arterbridge planned to do Minnie Riperton’s “Lovin’ You”. At her tender age of 15, she nailed it. I like her. She is through to Hollywood.

Last contestant being shown from the day-one auditions is Maurice Townsend. He is the minister of music at his church and a student. He sings “So High” by John Legend. I had goosebumps. They asked him to bring in his wife and 4 children. Jennifer and Harry coached one of the children to tell his dad that he was through to Hollywood.

Day two of the Detroit auditions and Jennifer is late (10:23 a.m.) . Returning to Idol is David Oliver Willis from Mount Dora, Florida. He had made it to the Vegas week. The past year he was working on his music and he and his wife opened a coffee shop in town. I love his voice. Harry thinks his instrument drives his vocals and he worries about those times he can’t play during American Idol (really? I don’t remember them restricting contestants in the past). Keith loves him. David is through to Hollywood. After leaving, however, Harry thinks he was born to play and sing, but does not think he is going to win. Jennifer says to him that you never know.

Identical twins Rakita and Karlita Gulledge say they have “natural talent.” They are terrible. Oh dear. I really want it to stop. Harry thought it was a minute of screaming. Jennifer thought it was like a high school talent show and was out of tune and a lot of screaming. Keith just says he has nothing more to add. Bye-bye.

In tonight’s #IdolHollywood or #IdolHome, Amanda with a copper wire in her hair was told by Harry that singing was not for her. I think that might be a bit harsh. I think singing for herself or her loved ones is just fine. Amanda now hates Harry.

Blake Soles was hoping for a ticket to Hollywood. Keith gives him some great advice instead.

Another returning Idol contestant was Brandy Neely sporting a new haircut. She was last seen in the Chicago auditions for season 12. She sang “Wanted” by Hunter Hayes. It was too breathy for me. I would like her voice if she got rid of that quality. Harry tells her to keep the guttural sound she makes but Jennifer tells her that is what has her on the fence and she thinks Brandy should lose it. But with Keith and Harry saying yes, Jennifer did not even mention her opinion, but I think she would have been a no.

Ethan Harris, donned “the lost Osmond brother”, is not only a good singer but a talented artist. He drew this beautiful sketch of Keith and he signed it. He had the audacity to sing Keith’s song, “You’ll Think of Me.” I would say yes even though the song did not allow him to show a huge range in vocals. They all dug him and he is through to Hollywood.

Next is a group of three auditions: Leah Guerrero, a 21-year-old file clerk from Clinton Township, Michigan. I think she needs to lose some of that vibrato. Zach Day, age 19, a tram driver from Stearns, Kentucky. I did not see enough to have an opinion. Symphony Howlett, age 24, a hostess from Miami, Florida. She was nasal and that sound in the back of the voice where it sounds like she is swallowing her own tongue is annoying me. Harry noted that, too, and said it was incredibly annoying and distracting. However, all three are through to Hollywood.

Although she is now living in Hollywood, Ayla Stackhouse returned to her hometown of Detroit to audition. She is a 17-year-old student. I was impressed with her vocal control and she has this light around her that is appealing. She is very articulate for her age. They see her star quality and say yes.

Eric Gordon, age 27, a lab technician from Richmond, Kansas is up next. His voice reminded me of the Motown sound; however, he needs a different hairstyle. He receives three yeses.

Of course, they still have to show the occasion bad audition. This time it was from Xavier Calvillo, age 25, a machine operator from Dearborn Heights, Michigan. He has a gritty voice that yells all the time. Harry was not impressed. Jennifer does not think it is as good as it needs to be. He wants more chance. Harry encourages him to leave with his dignity intact. He keeps begging. He gets three no’s, but as he is walking out begs for one more chance.

I think Tony Delbarrio should stick to construction work. He gets three no’s. He wants to try singing “Born to Be Wild” They say no. He sings Radioactive in the lobby and he thinks he has nailed it (right in the lobby) but he did not.

Ryan Nisbett is someone I will remember. He has a great story (having lost weight from 320 pounds), a great look, and a great sound. I loved his voice but especially his falsetto. He messed up on a note, but Harry and Jennifer looked as though they found it endearing. He pulls it back together to end it well. He is a 24-year-old art student from Deckerville, Michigan. Jennifer thought he was one of a kind. Harry thinks he is unique. He gets three yeses. He gets additional props from the judges when they discover he is sick after he politely told Keith he didn’t want to shake his hand because he had just coughed in it and didn’t want to spread his germs. The judges found it refreshing that he did not try to use it as an excuse. Ryan also appreciated the no-handshake gesture.

They closed out the Detroit auditions with a touching story about Marrialle Sellars, the 17-year-old young lady we saw at the top of the first show for season 13. Her father had encouraged her all her life to do musical things whether it was her voice or an instrument. He built her and her sisters a studio. In 2008 he died several days after Christmas. He left her a note to go forth and use her God-given talents. I think this is one of those cases where Harry commented about Nikki McKibbin’s son, if the story wasn’t there would they put the son through. In this case, I think their emotions of the story clouded their ears. I did not like it. It was off key in a lot of spots. Harry thinks she will be a nightmare for the other contestants. I don’t think so. She gets three yeses.

In Detroit, 40 tickets were handed out giving a new grand total of 119 bound for Hollywood.

Next: Atlanta

American Idol Season 13 Austin/San Francisco Auditions

23 01 2014

So far, we’ve seen a lot of great talent out there. And the judges are a riot together. The Austin auditions continue with Jesse Roach, a 27-year-old musician from Cypress Texas (next to my town). I really like her voice even though I don’t like country music. It is quite unique. Jennifer loves her. Keith said she has soul. Harry was not distracted by her rasp (like other people’s rasps). Three yeses.

Steven Curd, age 18, a clerk from San Antonio. He, too, has a unique voice. Anna Melvin, age 22, a waitress from Memphis, tried to sing Wrecking Ball. I disliked it very much. Ryan Clark, a 22-year-old bartender from San Marcos, was okay. Not sure if his voice was unique but that is a hard note combination to get without being sharp or flat. Keith loved them all. All three are through.

Jamiah Malik, age 15, a student from San Antonio, chose to sing an original. His friend, Quiandra Boston-Pearsall, a 17-year-old student from Adkins, Texas, also came to try out. They are interesting but are they good enough? I am not 100% convinced. Quiandra is through to the next round. I love Jamiah’s attitude about not being able to go through this year. Attitude in this life is everything.

Megan Miller, age 23, a media consultant, from Ethel, LA, chose to sing “Last Name” by Carrie Underwood. She showed some voice control, but some of sounded like yelling to me. My eardrums kind of retracted to protect themselves. I am not sure about her honestly. Harry said he is worried about when her voice is going to blow out while Jennifer liked the same qualities. Keith is worried about the audience listening to it. (Thank you Keith). Nevertheless, she received three yeses.

Grace Anne Field, age 27, a restaurant pianist from Austin, Texas. Absolutely NOT!!!! Harry is nice saying American Idol may not be the right type of competition for her. It was frenetic and all over the place. Jennifer said the vibrato was a little bit out of control. Keith just said, “It’s not there yet”.

Another pairing. Austin Alvarez, a 26-year-old make-up artist from Austin and Eric Wood, age 28, an old-field worker from Higginson, AR. I preferred Eric in this combination. Both are through.

Spencer Lloyd is a 19-year-old worship leader from Bryant, AR. Hello cutie pie! And you have a voice that matches. I had goosebumps although he did mess up on the last notes. Harry thinks he is an okay singer. Keith said entertaining is about engaging people and he totally did that. Three yeses although Harry struggled with his yes.

Marlon Lindsey waited 8-9 years now to try out. He was in the Army for a while but now is a 27-year-old student from Beaumont, Texas. I was not expecting the voice that came out (in a good way) singing Sam Cooke’s, “A Change is Gonna Come.” He is through to Hollywood.

Get suspender-wearer off the stage. Harry proves that Harry is funnier than this 28-year-old “actor”. Harry says, “Is this America’s Got Talent?” to the laughs of the production staff. Rick Rowling sucks as an actor as well as a singer as well as a comedian if that was his angle. Harry wants him gone; me, too!

The next contestant, T.K. Hash, does an awesome Obama imitation, a service manager hailing from Charlotte, North Carolina. He sings Fallout Boy’s “I Know What Your Songs Did In The Dark).” OH NO!!! That is a horrible song to audition with without music to accompany you. I think he would have done better on a different song. Keith loved it. Jennifer said there was something there that made them all perk up. Harry said he wouldn’t say he was the greatest singer he has ever heard, but he is soooo like-able it is a yes for him too.

McKenna Dennis is up for the hashtag game. Seventy-five percent voted #IdolHollywood versus 25% #IdolHome. And she indeed made it through.

Nikki McKibbin, who placed 3rd on the first season on Idol, had a son. Tristen Langley, age 15, is a student from Kennedale, Texas. He is really good. I like his smile. Harry thinks if the story of second-generation idol wasn’t there, he would say no. Jennifer totally disagrees. It was not blow-you-away, but he has a really good voice. Keith gave him some vocal tips to save his voice. Jennifer said yes, Harry said no but Keith said yes. (Harry has guts!)

A collage of performers is up next. Taylor Stearns, a 21-year-old student from Round Rock, Texas (I did not think she was good enough) got a yes from the judges along with several other unidentified people, but also some no’s in the bunch too.

LJ Hernandez is a 23-year-old farmer from Goliad, Texas whose ex-fiancée said did not have the talent, the skill or the will or charisma. I agree with her. His family needs to stop “supporting” this. They are enabling him.

John Fox, a 20-year-old, Magnolia, Texas, (another town in my backyard). He is a worship leader. There are a lot of great worship leaders with really great voices in Texas! I got goosebumps. Three yeses.

San Francisco

Rachel Rolleri, a 17-year-old student from Danville, CA. Her mom loves Keith Urban. I got goosebumps with her immediately (and again I am not a big country music fan). Got a little crack in her voice. Harry thinks she has an understated confidence. Three yeses.

Athena Williford, a 20-year-old student from Stockton, CA. She was okay. Demi Wolf, a 17-year-old student from Palo Alto, CA, a former junior Olympian, was again just okay. MK Nobilette, a 20-year-old student from San Francisco, CA, was probably the most unique out of the three. All three are yeses.

Making a unique entrance was Emmanuel Zidor, a 24-year-old airline ramp agent from Miami, Florida. I liked what he did with his song after he was asked to sing something else. It was very controlled. Jennifer thought it was beautiful. He told his teacher that he wanted to be on American Idol and that he wanted to win. The teacher said, “You will never be on that show, you can’t even sing.” Harry told him he has three music teachers up here and what do you think all three music teachers are going to tell you? YES! If his teacher told him that, that teacher needs to retire.

Three more unnamed contestants make it through and then Samuel Ramsey, a 24-year-old student from Temple Hills, MD sang. Harry voted no (payback for him using the word “jazzy”?). The other two did not vote (at least on camera).

Caitlin Johnson, a 15-year-old student (what is it with all these students?) from North Plains, OR, was okay in some parts and it was strange in other parts. Harry does not think she is ready. Jennifer thinks she is talented, but not perfect. Keith loved it and says yes. Jennifer gives her one more chance and will see her in Hollywood.

The enthusiastic Ronald Reed, a 23-year-old cook has big ambitions. Can he sing? Well he keeps playing guitar. He cannot sing and his facial expressions are creeping me out. He squeals when Jennifer called him sweetie. Keith wanted his vocals to be where his personality is but it was not. Harry tried to explain the difference between subjective and objective. Ronald looks shocked! He goes out and cries like a crushed child to his family and friends. Ryan tells him to be strong. He says he is coming back every year. I have no doubt that if Ronald harnesses his outlook into a different career path he will shine just like a star and perhaps do greater things for the world.

David Luning, a 26-year-old musician from Forestville, CA, wants to sing an original and it almost looks like Jennifer is bracing herself for something awful. Surprise! Not awful! He has a very unique voice. Jennifer says she loves it before he is even done. Keith is on the fence. On one hand he is original but on the other hand he would get crushed (presumably because of the choices of songs available?). Harry said it was interesting but may be too “downer” for Idol. Jennifer said yes. But Keith and Harry? Not sure, but he got at least one of them to make it to Hollywood.

Enter the twins! Selena Moreno, a 22-year-old hostess from Sacramento, sings Janis Joplin’s “Try”. It is okay. Sierra Moreno, a 22-year-old hostess, also from Sacramento. I liked her voice better. Harry says they won’t make it as a set. For Keith he liked Selena’s voice better but Sierra’s performance better. All three say yes to Selena. Jennifer said yes to Sierra but Keith and Harry said no.

Then a montage of no.

Look who it is!!!!! Briana Oakley is back! She was from last season and got cut during Hollywood week. And I still adore her! Harry felt like she is proud to sing. Goosebumps!

An unemployed Rico Perkins from Little Rock, AR wants a golden ticket. He even sings it. Aranesa Turner, a 20-year-old student from Sacramento. Both are going to Hollywood.

Gaddy Basil Foster, a 26-year-old server from Columbia, SC should stick to working out. I bet he would make a great fitness coach. Jennifer tried hard not to laugh.

Jennifer and Keith should have a baby-counting contest. Who says the word “baby” more?

LogoOh please no. Adam Roth is a sound healer for a living. I believe in the power of music to heal but….does his voice help or hurt? His vibrato bothers me and would not be relaxing to me. Harry got his chakra blown. Keith is baffled because his voice was kind of schizophrenic. Jennifer wondered if he was forcing it–was it fake? Harry says no. Jennifer says yes. Keith says yes.

The Count

19 from Sacramento
14 more in Austin
33 new Hollywood contestants from today’s show

Plus 46 from Wednesday night

79 total so far.

Next up: Detroit

American Idol Season 13 Boston/Austin Auditions

17 01 2014

Hey, it rhymes (Boston/Austin)! So now that I already previewed the episode, let’s review.  Logo

Marrialle Sellers: “Grenade” by Bruno Mars. The judges liked it. Oops. Keith “loved it.” I’m a no. It was pitchy dawg. I like her look though.

Troy Durden, a 29-year-old club singer, from Boston, MA, doing “Over The Rainbow.” I thought the performance was going to be a disaster but it wasn’t. He has a good sense of humor. He gets 3 yeses. I would say yes as well. Keith asked him to do the song while twerking and Troy happily obliges. They all say, “It’s a long shot, but it just might twerk.”

Sam Woolf, a 17-year-old student from Bradenton, Florida. He has had a tough life. He sang “Lego House” by Ed Sheeran. I got goosebumps. If you are a first-time reader to my blogs about singing and dancing shows, my goosebumps never lie. The young ladies are going to like him; he has a good vibe. He got 3 yeses.

There is a collage of singers who all received a yes. Kevin Cassidy, Ethan Thompson, Lindsay Pedicone. I liked all three especially Ethan. Lindsey might struggle with theme nights though. All three made it through.

And then, TA-DA Jillian Jensen. This woman has problems. I didn’t like her AT ALL. (SARCASM METER HEAVY TILT). I ADORE HER. Glad she made it. I would have stopped watching had she not. Her face was priceless when Harry Connick Jr. jokingly said “no.” She sounds as brilliant as ever.

Taylor Hildack (aka The Winker) is a jazz vocalist at a community college. She tried singing, “Before He Cheats” by Carrie Underwood. I didn’t think she was good enough. It was sharp and flat and all over the place. Jennifer said yes, but Harry and Keith said no.

A collage of clips with contestants getting “no” responses was next along with the fallout from the responses.

Stephanie Hanvey, a 16-year-old lifeguard, from Howell, New Jersey was up next singing Jessie J’s “Price Tag.” I did not like her gaspy breath at the end of all the lines of lyrics. The judges, however, gave her three yeses.

Morgan Deplitch, a 15-year-old student from Somerset, MA. “My mother loves you.” Poor Harry. She tried singing “Ooh La La” by Grace Potter. It was too breathy for me. Harry did not like that she was a 15-year-old singing that song with those lyrics. Jennifer said he was being such a dad. But Morgan is through with three yeses.

James Earl made me laugh. He did not even know what a Walkman was and reminded Harry that he is “old” because he wasn’t even born then. He sounded weird, like he was imitating three different singers while he was singing an original composition and add helium to that mix. He did not get to advance.

Jacqueline Verna, age 18, a student from West Chester, PA. Harry is not impressed with her pentatonics (i.e. the vocal gymnastics). As soon as Jennifer said, “come back next year,” she started walking out before Harry even got a chance to say “no.” And Keith had said yes so Harry could have changed his mind.

Austin Percario, a 17-year-old student from Warren, New Jersey. He comes with a stage mom. And he looks like Justin Bieber. Two strikes already for me. But WAIT! He makes a point to say that mom will NOT be with him if he makes it through to Hollywood week. He sings, “Titanium” by Sia. I’d like his voice if he got rid of that breath issue. He makes it through to the next round.

Kaitlyn Jackson, a 15-year-old student from Norwich, New York. She sings an original song that she wrote for her grandfather after he suffered a heart attack, but before he passed away the next day. She has a beautiful voice, and yes, I got goosebumps. Wow! At 15 she could keep her composure for her tender age in a song that is emotionally charged for her. I am thoroughly impressed. Three yeses. And in keeping with the Austin/Boston rhyme night, Jennifer says, “She’s smart and has heart.”

It is now day two in Boston. Keith London, a 21-year-old, who does odd jobs, from Hazelton, Pennsylvania. He sang, “Roar” by Katy Perry. If someone can improve this song in any way, they have my vote. I loved this acoustic version. Keith thought it was fantastic. Harry said okay. Jennifer loved it. Keith thought he was unique. Keith and Jennifer put him through to Hollywood week.

From Tauton, Massachusetts, Sam Atherton, age 23 and unemployed, boldly states, “I don’t practice anymore” because he thinks he is that good. This is going to be a complete disaster. A true artist never stops learning and practicing. Keith tells him to do the worst of the three songs he wants to sing for them. He croons part of his original “….love doesn’t last forever…” and I’m hoping neither does the rest of the song. Harry chimes in the same sentiment. This guy creeps me out. He claims that he is a better musician than JLo, Keith and “Tony Connick Jr” combined.

In a new segment called #IdolHollywood or #IdolHome, Christine singing “House of the Rising Sun is presented. Fifty-six percent says Hollywood and 44% say “IdolHome.” She is through.

Shanon Wilson, age 24, is a student from Houston (where I live) in the house! I was not sure about him until he went into the falsetto. The falsetto sold me. He is through to the next round.

I think Stephanie Petronelli, age 22, should stick to cheerleading. She said “Ooh La La” by Grace Potter and while it was better than the version heard by Morgan, it wasn’t great. Harry was a “no.” Jennifer said yes, and Keith was on the fence, but ultimately said yes. However, Harry said he changes his vote if it meant all four cheerleaders. (Such a funny guy).

The focus changes to the Austin auditions. Keith was wearing a “Keep Austin Weird” t-shirt. It’s unclear if Jacob Fortis, from Heartsprings, Arkansas is through or not (maybe we find out on Thursday’s episode).

Durann Cree, age 17, a student from Austin tried to sing “Cupid’s Got a Shotgun” by Carrie Underwood, but she was not ready yet. Jennifer said “yes” but she had a lot of work to do. Keith and Harry, however, said no.

Micheal (not a typo) Gonzales from Waco, Texas, age 18, builds trailers. He is a “hell no” for me. Lyden McCown, age 28, a store manager from Jacksonville, Texas, and Nikki Pool, a 19-year-old student, from Sherwood, Arkansas, journeys also end there. This was followed by another collage of “yes” responses of unknown contestants. Isabell Gallegos, a 17-year-old student from Cedar Hill, Texas is through to the next round as well.

Savion Wright, from Jasper, Texas, suffered from ADHD with a lot of behavior issues until he found music. Music was his medicine (I love that). He sang an original song and I am now a fan!! Goosebumps! Harry jokes that he is going to have to learn how to be nice to people. They played with him telling him “no.” He says his mom is JLo’s biggest fan, but I think he is wrong because, Savion, all she sees is you in this moment.

The next group of three all received yeses from the judges. I liked the little bit I heard from Terrica Curry, a 20-year-old recreation center staff member, from North Little Rock, Arkansas. Out of the three, I liked Justin Fira, a 24-year-old valet attendant, the best. I fear that Shelby Comey, a 15-year-old student from Mason, Texas, is going to be eaten alive in Hollywood. She sang “Delta Dawn” and I did not like it at all.

“Up To the Mountain” was the song choice for Madelyn Patterson, a 22-year-old hairdresser from Jackson, Georgia. She was a surprise to me and I loved it. Goosebumps! She got two yeses. Harry wanted to give her some advice, but he said he would save it for Hollywood.

The next three contestants also made it through to Hollywood. I liked Viviana Villalon‘s Maroon 5 song on the ukulele. I also liked Savannah Young, a 17-year-old lifeguard from Odessa, Texas. But Ben Boone is the one that I liked the most. He is a 22-year-old student from Pineville, Louisiana and has a very unique voice. I also liked his eyes. Jennifer said it was her first goosebumps for the season.

I thought Malcolm Allen, a 21-year-old grocer from Wrightsville, Arkansas, but I was very surprised. He does not need an air guitar in order to compete. If he could marry music, he totally would. I like his sense of humor, but it was the thing that made me first think his performance would suck. He received a triple yes from Jennifer so the boys’ opinion did not matter.

Rolando Guerrero, a 21-year-old server from Bastrop, Texas, was overcome with emotion at seeing his idol, Jennifer Lopez. She said she wanted “to crush his face.” He planned to sing, “Hold It, Don’t Drop It.” I wanted to love it, but it was not good. He receive three no’s, but I don’t think he left feeling like he lost anything. He got to meet and hug JLo.

Poor Harry Connick Jr. He gets no love. No one seems to know him, and Idol catches all the contestants who freely admit to it. They should get an immediate “no” for not doing their homework.

Then the best part of the night walks in. In walks Sugar Land, Texas resident, Munfarid Zaidi. I think he believes there is a film called, “Something About Harry” because he goes to sleep reading Harry’s Wikipedia entry. Harry goes over and picks him up, showcasing the fact that Harry indeed works out. Thank goodness Munfarid is pretty thin. Harry tells him to blow them away on the first song and he will “pick him up and hold him like a baby” for the second song. Munfarid sings “Crazy For You” by Adele. He surprised me because I figured it would suck, but it didn’t. I love him! Harry holds him for song number two, which he decides to sing, “I Just Want You Close.” Jennifer and Keith are beside themselves in hysterics. What an awesome way to end the premiere episode.

That made it 20 tickets from Austin, 25 from Boston, and 1 from Michigan (the first audition they showed at the top of the show) for a grand total of 46.

Next up: More from Austin and San Francisco.

American Idol Season 13 Preview

13 01 2014

It works! It really works! I was worried that American Idol had lost its spark. The diva bit from last year got very old very quick (love Nicki and love Mariah, but you just don’t mix two chemicals together sometimes). I worried that after Harry Connick, Jr.’s mentoring last year, he would take the place of the long-winded Mariah. At least during the auditions, he was concise and humorous, playing well off of Keith’s quick-wit which we have come to love. Jennifer Lopez fills out the three-person judging team very well, slipping back into her old shoes like they were comfy slippers.

I’ll have to sum up much of what I saw since most of the contestant names I cannot say. The first person they put through in Boston I thought was off-key, but she got 3 yes votes. The club singer I thought would be a disaster was not. Some were just average.

And then, there she was….is that????? IT IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I thought I was going to have to remain silent about it, but apparently her name was already released in a newspaper. She is part of the Boston auditions–the person who SHOULD have gone through on The X-Factor, Ms. Jillian Jensen. (Chill out people; I’m not giving out spoilers). But does she make it? My lips are sealed. If she makes it through and if she makes it through Hollywood week, she will have a huge advantage. She has worked hard these past years obtaining 158,068 followers (as of this writing) on Twitter, which will translate into instant votes for her.

The Winker was a no for me (and Keith agreed with me on that one). Stage-Mom Boy was too breathy for me but he has the clean-cut Bieber look that the young girls will adore. The contestant with the initials M.D. also was a bit too breathy for me. The young lady who is 15 and performed her own song gave me goosebumps. On day 2 of the Boston auditions, K.L. took a popular song and made me like it more, which showed great musicianship. The young man who claims “not to practice anymore” and thinks he has “perfect pitch” is deluding himself. I was mildly impressed with the Houston contestant I’ll call Mr. Tackler, but when he hit his falsetto, he won me over. The cheerleader was okay; I expected her to do worse than she did.

Next up was day 1 of the Austin auditions. I might have to go buy Keith’s album for wearing a “Keep Austin Weird” t-shirt. It does not get off to a good start. There were a lot of no responses before getting to a few yes responses. The Tall Boy from Jasper sang an original song and I liked it. The person with the initials M.P. gave me goosebumps. I thoroughly loved the worship pastor. Based on the 2010 census, Mission, Texas has a population of 77,058. Is there room for more than one contestant from Mission? The young man from Sugar Land made me laugh. After a montage of contestants who could not remember Harry Connick, Jr.’s name (or that he was even a singer prior to his acting career), MZ from Sugar Land only had eyes for Harry. He goes to bed every night reading the Wikipedia of Harry’s life. But can he sing? Tune in to find out.

After Boston and the first day of Austin, 45 golden tickets were handed out. I think there is still life left in this old girl.

Don’t forget there is a screening of Wednesday’s episode tomorrow in select cities; click here for more details.   In addition, an interactive LIVE Q&A will appear in satellite venues, as well as streamed www.americanidol.com and www.livestream.com, beginning at 8:30 PM ET/5:30 PM PT.

FOX is announcing premieres dates for new and returning series, including the returns of AMERICAN IDOL and THE FOLLOWING, and the debut of new legal drama RAKE.

Featuring host Ryan Seacrest, a new judging panel, including Harry Connick, Jr., Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban, and Randy Jackson returning as the new in-house mentor, AMERICAN IDOL XIII begins with an exciting two-night, four-hour premiere Wednesday, Jan. 15 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) and Thursday, Jan. 16 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT).

Following the season finale of SLEEPY HOLLOW at a special time on Monday, Jan. 20 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT), last season’s No. 1 new series THE FOLLOWING (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) begins its 15-week uninterrupted second season. Created by Kevin Williamson (“The Vampire Diaries,” “Dawson’s Creek,” the “Scream” franchise) and starring Golden Globe Award-winning actor Kevin Bacon (“X-Men: The Last Stand,” “Frost/Nixon”) and James Purefoy (“Rome”), Season Two catches up with RYAN HARDY (Bacon), in the wake of a horrific new murder spree, which furthers his suspicion that JOE CARROLL’s (Purefoy) reign of terror is far from over. The series also stars Shawn Ashmore (the “X-Men” franchise) and Valorie Curry (“Veronica Mars”), and joining the cast this season are Connie Nielsen (“Boss,” “Law & Order: SVU”), Jessica Stroup (“90210”), Sam Underwood (“Dexter”) and Tiffany Boone (“Beautiful Creatures”).

Bold new legal drama RAKE debuts with a special two-night event beginning Sunday, Jan. 19 (10:00-11:00 PM ET/7:00-8:00 PM PT), following the NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME, and continuing with its time period premiere on Thursday, Jan. 23 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT). Making his broadcast television series debut, Academy Award nominee and Emmy Award winner Greg Kinnear (“Little Miss Sunshine,” “The Kennedys”) plays a brilliant and frustratingly charming criminal defense attorney, whose chaotic and self-destructive personal life often gets in the way of his professional one.

Beginning Saturday, Jan. 11 (11:00 PM-Midnight ET/PT), ANIMATION DOMINATION HIGH-DEF will feature LUCAS BROS. MOVING CO. and GOLAN THE INSATIABLE. In LUCAS BROS. MOVING CO., the stand-up comedy of New York-based identical twins Kenny and Keith Lucas (The Lucas Brothers) gets animated. The twins run a moving company, and no matter what happens around them, they always remain totally, bizarrely unfazed. GOLAN THE INSATIABLE is the story of a mighty godlord from an alternate universe who arrives in the small town of Oak Grove, where his only friend is a 10-year-old goth girl named DYLAN. As previously announced, on Saturday, Nov. 23 (11:00 PM-Midnight ET/PT), as part of a special ANIMATION DOMINATION HIGH-DEF lineup, LUCAS BROS. MOVING CO. and GOLAN THE INSATIABLE will preview, prior to their January launch.

As previously announced, new Army-set comedy ENLISTED debuts Friday, Jan. 10 (9:30-10:00 PM ET/PT). Written and created by Kevin Biegel (“Cougar Town,” “Scrubs”) and starring Geoff Stults (“The Finder”), Chris Lowell (“Private Practice,” “Veronica Mars”) and Parker Young (“Suburgatory”), ENLISTED is a single-camera comedy about an older sibling who returns home to reconnect with his two brothers and lead a group of misfits on a small Florida Army post.

This spring, new comedies SURVIVING JACK and US & THEM will debut on FOX; series premiere dates to be announced. From Emmy Award nominee Bill Lawrence (“Scrubs,” “Cougar Town”) and set in 1990s Southern California, SURVIVING JACK stars Emmy Award nominee Christopher Meloni (“Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”) as a man becoming a dad, as his son (Connor Buckley, “Deception”) becomes a man, in a time before “coming of age” was something you could Google. SURVIVING JACK is set to air on Thursdays (8:30-9:00 PM ET/PT) for eight weeks, following AMERICAN IDOL (8:00-8:30 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed) results shows. New ensemble comedy US & THEM will also join the schedule in the spring. Starring Emmy Award nominee Jason Ritter (“Parenthood”) and Alexis Bledel (“Mad Men,” “Gilmore Girls”), and based on an award-winning BBC series, the series follows a young couple, whose path to happily-ever-after is complicated by the screwed-up circus of people closest to them.

After the unsurprising surprise twist last week, the top 4 were allowed to sing again since the judges never used the save all season. The votes tonight will be added to the votes last week to determine who is going home. Tonight’s songs are “now” and “then.” The “now” selection has to be from 2013. The “then” had to be on a list of standard classics.

All the ladies looked fabulous this evening. I have no doubt that all will be successful after the show is over. But here is my rundown for tonight (I’m behind on my blog from last week–so I think I’ll just skip. Most of the performances last week were lackluster anyway. This week, I wasn’t thrilled about Mariah and Nicki fighting.

Angie Miller

Song 1: “Diamonds” by Rihanna

I lived it but I hope we aren’t going to get ballads all night tonight. A little sleepy sometimes. She cracked in a few places. Keith thought it missed the mark. Nicki said it was bland and lackluster. Randy agrees with Keith but liked the leather shorts (okay?). Mariah: Girl–I love you but condense your comments!

Song 2: “Someone To Watch Over Me”

This could have been a really big song for her. It was sleepy for me. Her vocal is nice but it was not a standout performance (for me). Keith loved it. Nicki gave her some performance tips. Randy thought it was an amazing vocal.

Amber Holcomb

Song 1: “Just Give Me a Reason” by P!nk

That was rough. She sounds like she is singing just under the note. She has done much better in the past. Nicki said there was no emotional connection (I agree). Randy said it was not stellar.

Song 2: “My Funny Valentine”

Goosebumps. Phenomenal. I felt she was very connected to the song. It was flawless perfection. The judges gave her a well-deserved standing ovation. She became very emotional because she thinks that she has no shot of going through next week and was openly tearful. I felt so bad for her. It was not a fake cry just for votes. Note to Amber: Jennifer Hudson did not win Idol either–look how far she went. It is what you do with the opportunities you get and you must passionately pursue your dream.

Candice Glover

Song 1: “When I Was Your Man” by Bruno Mars

Candice IS BACK! Last week I was so disappointed that she wasn’t pouring her heart and soul into his music which I have seen her do multiple times in the past. I also love her hair. I had goosebumps (see my goosebump history–it has never steered my wrong). Randy said it was amazing. Mariah and Keith thought it was a winning performance. Nicki said she deserved a standing ovation and Mariah stands up after the others and pretends to throw glitter on her.

Song 2: “You’ve Changed” by Billie Hollday

Goosebumps AGAIN!! Her voice is also perfection during both songs this evening. She receives another standing ovation.

Kree Harrison

Song 1: “See You Again” by Carrie Underwood

I loved it. She looks lighter in spirit this week even though this was a serious song. She was looking downright depressed last week. Keith thought her voice was full but there was a disconnection between what he was hearing (a full band) and what he was seeing (an intimate setting with an acoustic guitar).

Song 2: “Stormy Weather”

She looks beautiful. I felt she was very connected to the song. She did not take Harry Connick, Jr.’s advice. I thought that was a good thing because I loved the way she did it. The judges, however, did not like her song choice. They thought “God Bless The Child” might have been a better song for her, for example.

So my picks for tonight are: Candice, Kree, Amber, Angie

Last week my picks were: Angie, Candice, Amber, Kree

It will be interesting to see who goes home tonight. David Cook will be on!
