The Following “Mad Love” Preview (S1E4)

9 02 2013

TheFollowingThe post contains spoilers for episodes 1-3 of THE FOLLOWING but none for “Mad Love” airing Monday, February 11, 2013 at 9/8 central. If you do not want to know what happened in those episodes yet, please come back another time.

“The Poet’s Fire” ended in a wicked twist to the story–they are going to try turning Joey Matthews (Kyle Catlett) into a serial killer. The writers also killed off Agent Reilly (Billy Brown). If the episode proved anything, no one but James Purefoy and Kevin Bacon are safe from being killed off, but everyone else is a target. Jordy gave Agent Debra Parker (Annie Parisse) information that revealed Maggie Kester (Virginia Kull) was not such a victim after all. Jordy Raines (Steven Monroe) kills himself in an unusual way; I had to turn away on that one. At the end, Maggie slips away after Ryan kills her husband, Rick. You know that Maggie will wreak havoc soon, and the writers waste no time.

Maggie, as you know from the commercial previews, captures Ryan Hardy’s sister, Jenny. Although the cult followers are working together, on some level they all still harbor secrets. It seems to be improv night for the serial killer. There is one scene in particular that reminded me of a Dexter scene from last season. Emma Hill (Valorie Curry) and Paul (Adan Canto) seem to come to some sort of truce for the moment.

Favorite lines: Jacob (Nico Tortorella) saying to Paul: “You have gone off the deep end.” Seems a bit ironic since they are both serial killers. Jacob to a potential victim: “Don’t scream, okay?”

By the end of the episode, it occurred to me that all the main characters are living in their own prisons. Physically, Joe Carroll is living in prison. Ryan is in an emotional prison, distancing himself from people he loves from different reasons. Claire Matthews (Natalie Zea) is in prison in both ways–she is physically confined to her home and except for brief periods of time, she cannot be with Ryan the way she wishes. Joey, the child, is being held prisoner, but he does not realize that. And Jacob, Emma and Paul are physically isolated from the rest of the world.

“Mad Love” episode of THE FOLLOWING airs Monday, February 11, 2013 at 9/8 central on FOX.

“The Following” Pilot Episode Preview

9 01 2013

For people who like their drama terrifying, dark and complex, Fox Broadcasting’s “THE FOLLOWING” will offer up a lot of all of it. This show is not for the faint at heart as evidenced by the first 5 minutes of the show. Kevin Williamson of “Scream” fame has done his homework with serial killer and cult leader Charles Manson immediately springing to my mind as a Carroll equivalent. As serial killer Joe Carroll, James Purefoy (“Rome”) offers up a performance that rivals Anthony Hopkins in “The Silence of the Lambs.” A literature professor particularly fond of the works of Edgar Allan Poe, Carroll goes on a killing spree that ultimately ends in his original capture by Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon). Several weeks before his execution date, Carroll escapes which brings Ryan Hardy out of retirement. Ryan is not alone working the case. He is joined by FBI agents Mike Weston (Shawn Ashmore from “X-Men”), Agent Reilly (Billy Brown from “Dexter”), and Debra Parker (Annie Parisse from “Person of Interest“).

While in prison, Carroll has been busy amassing followers. He is crafty, intelligent, charismatic and terrifying. He has thought out each move of his chess game, being the master manipulator that is common with cult leaders. Carroll’s ex-wife Claire Matthews (Natalie Zea from “Justified”) and son Joey (Kyle Catlett from “Mercy”) also are key figures in this new drama. The story expertly cuts back and forth between current day and the past but always has a great forward motion like you were used to from the show, “24.”

THE FOLLOWING begins at 9:00 eastern, 8:00 central time on Monday, January 21, 2013.

My thanks again to Fox Broadcasting and the Fox VIP program for allowing access to this new thriller.
