The post contains spoilers for episodes 1-3 of THE FOLLOWING but none for “Mad Love” airing Monday, February 11, 2013 at 9/8 central. If you do not want to know what happened in those episodes yet, please come back another time.
“The Poet’s Fire” ended in a wicked twist to the story–they are going to try turning Joey Matthews (Kyle Catlett) into a serial killer. The writers also killed off Agent Reilly (Billy Brown). If the episode proved anything, no one but James Purefoy and Kevin Bacon are safe from being killed off, but everyone else is a target. Jordy gave Agent Debra Parker (Annie Parisse) information that revealed Maggie Kester (Virginia Kull) was not such a victim after all. Jordy Raines (Steven Monroe) kills himself in an unusual way; I had to turn away on that one. At the end, Maggie slips away after Ryan kills her husband, Rick. You know that Maggie will wreak havoc soon, and the writers waste no time.
Maggie, as you know from the commercial previews, captures Ryan Hardy’s sister, Jenny. Although the cult followers are working together, on some level they all still harbor secrets. It seems to be improv night for the serial killer. There is one scene in particular that reminded me of a Dexter scene from last season. Emma Hill (Valorie Curry) and Paul (Adan Canto) seem to come to some sort of truce for the moment.
Favorite lines: Jacob (Nico Tortorella) saying to Paul: “You have gone off the deep end.” Seems a bit ironic since they are both serial killers. Jacob to a potential victim: “Don’t scream, okay?”
By the end of the episode, it occurred to me that all the main characters are living in their own prisons. Physically, Joe Carroll is living in prison. Ryan is in an emotional prison, distancing himself from people he loves from different reasons. Claire Matthews (Natalie Zea) is in prison in both ways–she is physically confined to her home and except for brief periods of time, she cannot be with Ryan the way she wishes. Joey, the child, is being held prisoner, but he does not realize that. And Jacob, Emma and Paul are physically isolated from the rest of the world.
