Award-Winning Phenomenon GLEE Moves to Thursdays Following THE X FACTOR This Fall

New York (Monday, May 14, 2012) – Peter Rice, Chairman, Entertainment, Fox Networks Group; and Kevin Reilly, President, Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company, today unveiled the FOX primetime schedule for the 2012-2013 television season to the national advertising community during its annual Programming Presentation at the Beacon Theatre.

“Television continues to be the most vibrant, emotionally rich platform in the world,” said Rice. “FOX has been the No. 1 network for eight seasons by delivering groundbreaking, engaging and culturally relevant shows that connect with our audience, not only on-air, but wherever they are in the digital or social space.”

“With first-year culture-driving hits like NEW GIRL and THE X FACTOR and strong returning tentpoles like AMERICAN IDOL and GLEE, we were laser focused on our development and it has really paid off,” said Reilly. “I have no doubt that our two genre-defying new dramas, our new FOX Sports Saturdays, and our three new distinctive, sharp and upscale comedies – all fronted by incredible talent – can propel FOX to even greater success.”

This fall, two new half-hour comedies – THE MINDY PROJECT and BEN AND KATE – will join RAISING HOPE and NEW GIRL on an all-new Tuesday night comedy block. Created by Emmy-nominated writer/producer and New York Times best-selling author Mindy Kaling (“The Office”) and starring Kaling, Chris Messina (“Damages”), Anna Camp (“The Good Wife”) and newcomer Ed Weeks, THE MINDY PROJECT features Kaling as a skilled OB/GYN navigating the tricky waters of both her personal and professional life, as she pursues her dreams of becoming the perfect woman, finding the perfect man and getting her perfect romantic comedy ending.

BEN AND KATE, the heartwarming new sibling comedy created by Dana Fox (“What Happens In Vegas”) and directed by Jake Kasdan (“Bad Teacher”), also debuts Tuesdays this fall. Starring newcomer Dakota Johnson and Nat Faxon (“Bad Teacher,” Academy Award-winning co-screenwriter of “The Descendants”), the comedy follows a pair of odd-couple siblings – one, an overly responsible single mom; the other, an exuberant kid-at-heart – and their friends as they push each other out of their comfort zones and into real life.

The compelling new drama THE MOB DOCTOR will debut this fall. Executive-produced by Josh Berman (BONES, “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”) and Rob Wright (“Crossing Jordan”), the engrossing character drama stars Jordana Spiro (“My Boys”) as a brilliant, life-saving surgeon caught in a complex web between her promising medical career and her family’s debt to Chicago’s Southside mob.

Edge-of-your-seat thriller THE FOLLOWING, created by Kevin Williamson (“Dawson’s Creek,” “Scream” franchise) and starring Golden Globe Award-winning Kevin Bacon (“X-Men,” “Frost/Nixon”) and James Purefoy (“Rome”), premieres in midseason. The spellbinding and intense drama follows an ex-FBI agent (Bacon) called out of retirement to track down a devious and diabolical serial killer (Purefoy), the mastermind behind a nationwide string of murders.

THE GOODWIN GAMES, the inventive new comedy from the executive producers of “How I Met Your Mother,” Carter Bays, Craig Thomas and Chris Harris, is slated for midseason. Starring Scott Foley (“Grey’s Anatomy,” “Felicity”), Becki Newton (“Ugly Betty”) and Jake Lacy (“Better With You”), the family comedy tells the story of three estranged siblings who return home after the loss of their beloved father (guest star Beau Bridges, “The Descendants”), and unexpectedly find themselves poised to inherit more than $20 million – if, and only if, they can adhere to their late father’s trivial wishes.

It was also announced that GLEE, the award-winning cultural phenomenon, will move this fall to Thursdays (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), following all-new installments of Simon Cowell’s THE X FACTOR (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT). THE X FACTOR returns for Season Two with two new judges, who will join Cowell and L.A. Reid on the world’s largest search to award one global superstar or music group a $5 million record contract.

FOX series returning in 2012-2013 include: AMERICAN DAD (Season 8), AMERICAN IDOL (Season 12), BOB’S BURGERS (Season 3), BONES (Season 8), THE CLEVELAND SHOW (Season 4), COPS (Season 25), FAMILY GUY (Season 10), FRINGE (Season 5), GLEE (Season 4), HELL’S KITCHEN (Season 10), KITCHEN NIGHTMARES (Season 5), MASTERCHEF (Season 3), MOBBED (specials), NEW GIRL (Season 2), RAISING HOPE (Season 3), THE SIMPSONS (Season 24), SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE (Season 9) and TOUCH (Season 2). American Idol Finale — And I’m Going To Be There — Pinch Me!

23 05 2011

I am going to the AMERICAN IDOL FINALE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Did I use enough exclamation marks?)

How did I manage this? Keep reading.

The first week of May was a very exciting week for me. At the beginning of the week, I had won two $25 gift certificates to My Fit Foods in our local area. I decided to go ahead and donate that back to my son’s school for autism so the children could take a field trip one day, maybe a lesson centering on nutrition. Later in the week I got another swag package from @OFFICIALFOXVIP to promote the season finale of Fringe.

The very next day I got ANOTHER package, this time from a program I participated in back in January with Fox where they sent out Red Vines to celebrate the move to Friday nights (thanks to my friend Nadine for that wonderful hookup). This was similar to my package I had gotten the day before, but this time it included a signed Fringe script!!!!

Being with Fox VIP, I have had access to previews of Fox shows not yet aired, swag, and a few internal contests. I have also met interesting people and continue to enjoy getting to know them. The previous week we got a notice that one of the Fox VIP group would be going to the American Idol finale. I hesitated at first, making sure that if I did win, I would be able to fulfill this commitment. Having a trip in the middle of the week in the month of May had three strikes against me: 1) The trip itself and my waxing and waning health; 2) my husband would have to take the 3-hour journey every day to take Patrick to school and stay with him after school; 3) I was supposed to have a big meeting with the school district in the month of May and trying to coordinate everyone’s schedules was becoming nightmarish; this would mean another 3 days someone was not available. However, the other side of me said, “When are you going to get enough opportunity like this with the odds of winning so favorable. You’ll regret not entering, and as you see in this entry “Life Without Regrets” I would not want that to happen. Oddly enough, when I sent in my entry, I told my husband, “I’m going to win this.” It was that sixth sense feeling that I often get, a gut feeling that has saved my life and rarely has been wrong. Perhaps it is because I am a Pisces. In our private group, we were making jokes about who was going to win and I said, “I’m very sorry but my horoscope said I was winning.”

Friday, May 6, 2011 is when the name would be drawn. Friday was also the day of Patrick’s school’s Mother’s Day celebration–a picnic at the park. I had left at about 11:15 a.m. We had a wonderful time. When Patrick used his IPad & Proloquo2go program to give me a Mother’s Day greeting, I was moved to tears. It was the best Mother’s Day gift EVER.

Patrick and his teacher

Patrick and his teacher at Mother's Day Picnic using the IPad to tell me something.

I came home and shared this day with my husband. I sat down at my computer to start working when I saw the email from Fox asking me to call them. Then I remembered: This was the day they were drawing the name for the contest, and I let out a scream that I won to my husband.

The phone then rang. It was a parent of a child with autism who really needed to talk with me. I just could not ask her if I could call her back. If you are a parent with a child with autism, you know that sometimes you need to talk to someone immediately. I would want someone to be there for me. The phone call lasted until almost 5 p.m. Fortunately, Los Angeles is 2 hours behind or I really would have had to call her back.

I dialed the phone number and reached the person with whom I needed to speak. I screamed, “Did I WIN?????” With the banshee screech I let loose, I’m surprised I did not rupture her eardrum.

The possibility of James Durbin being named the American Idol this year was exciting to me. The autism community speaks often of him and what a wonderful role model he is to the world. Of course, we know James will not be in the final 2, but I will get to see him perform.

I will fly out Tuesday afternoon. My friend and I will be having dinner at LA Market, where Nona from Hell’s Kitchen last year is now working (Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant). On Wednesday, I plan to have lunch with my brother-in-law who lives in the LA area before I go get my tickets at the Fox tent, and then on to the American Idol finale results show. I do not know where I’ll be sitting in the audience, but I feel blessed to be there. The people at the hotel say there is not a bad seat in the Nokia. My sign will hopefully say “Houston Warrior Moms Love James.” Something to that effect, but definitely the Houston Warrior Moms part will be on there. That will depend if I can find the right supplies in the area of the hotel. No cameras or phones are allowed into the Nokia. After the finale, I hope to meet up with another person I know for dinner. Then Thursday, I’m on the plane home again.

I hope to post updates here, on Facebook and/or on Twitter (Follow @PBMom) as I can access the hotel computers. Hope you’ll follow along this wonderful journey with me.

Takedown (a.k.a. Transparency)–A Virtual Stargate Reunion

17 05 2011

Having made its successful world premiere at the Dallas International Film Festival to much critical acclaim, Transparency (known as Takedown in Europe and the United States) is now available for purchase from Amazon.com.

Takedown

Without giving too much of the story away, it is a dark tale about human trafficking. Channeling Charles Bronson, Lou Diamond Phillips nails the character “David,” the movie’s antihero. He is joined by the talents of Estella Warren (Planet of the Apes, Law and Order) and Deborah Kara Unger who give the film its warmth and chill respectively. Transparency (a.k.a. Takedown) is filled with outstanding stunt work, beautiful production quality, amazing dark humor, and unexpected plot moments that had the Dallas audience startled in their chairs or had them gasping in disbelief, with a complex, contemplative ending.

Raul Inglis wrote this outstanding script in a mere 2 weeks, the original idea for the film having been pitched to him by Matt R. Kelly. Galvanized by real video footage about human trafficking, Raul made sure to include some of disturbing, resonating comments into the script. Later he signed on to become the director. The research became another source of inspiration that gave the film an element of authenticity. Originally it was planned to have the women just speak with Serbian or Russian accents; however, when women during the audition process spoke in their native Serbian or Russian language, the script suddenly became alive.

Lou had been involved with Matt on a previous Hallmark Channel film called “The Angel and the Bad Man.” Matt came up to Lou on set during that time and told him he was a producer. Lou was thinking, “Yeah, yeah, good for you; so is everyone else in Hollywood.” A year later, Matt pitched his film idea, and after reading 5 pages, Lou was hooked, feeling like it had a mixture of “Death Wish” and “Taxi Driver” with a retro-70′s vibe about it.

Shot in Vancouver, British Columbia in a mere 13 days, the film tapped into the wealth of talent from the region. Not only did the cast list read like a Stargate reunion (including Aaron Pearl, Kendall Cross, Michael Kopsa, Vitaly Kravchenko, Emma Lahana, Jonathan Walker, Anna Galvin, Aleks Panuovic, Dan Payne, and Bruce Crawford), Leo Award winner Michael C. Blundell did a stellar job as cinematographer, bringing his Stargate Universe production crew, who were on hiatus at the time, with him to make this tightly budgeted movie look like a million bucks that would rival any at the box office.

Other gifted performers rounding out the cast, many of whom can be seen in other favorite Vancouver productions, include Jordana Largy, Dariya Parakhnevych, Matt Kelly, Adrijana Blauhorn, Anja Savcic, Alberta Mayne, Emma Sutton, Bill MacDonald, Alexander Mandra, Taras Kostyuk, Andrei Kovski, Vadim Oskolkov, and Michele Cummins.

This is a movie worth the investment, not only to support this wonderful film, but to help support the independent film-making community as a whole.

Farewell Stargate

9 05 2011

Be forewarned, this is a very long blog post.

On Monday at 9:01 p.m. central daylight time, original Stargate programming will end.  Stargate, with Kurt Russell and James Spader, aired on October 28, 1994. On July 27, 1997, Stargate SG-1 premiered on Showtime where it ran for 5 seasons before moving to Sci-Fi Channel where it continued until 2007, having completed 214 shows and earning the title of longest running North American science fiction series on television. With each passing season, fans just could not get enough of the main cast: Richard Dean Anderson as Jack O’Neil (with varying command titles along the way); Amanda Tapping as Samantha Carter; Michael Shanks as Daniel Jackson; Christopher Judge as Teal’c. Don S. Davis (rest his soul) was cast as George Hammond. Corin Nemec was cast as Jonas Quinn after Michael Shanks left the show for a short period of time. Later, when Richard Dean Anderson needed to take some time-out for his family, Ben Browder (as Cameron Mitchell) and Claudia Black (as Vala) were extraordinary choices to add to the team.

Families would sit down and watch the show together. They would attend conventions together. They felt like the cast and crew were like extended family. The cast became role models for children.

With the huge success of Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis was born in July 16, 2004, with SG-1, and SGA filling out a wonderful line-up that eventually added Battlestar Galactica for a power-packed Sci-Fi Friday line-up. It was ambitious to do two Stargate shows concurrently. Cast in season 1 were stars Joe Flanigan, David Hewlett, Rachel Luttrel, Rainbow Sun Francks, Torri Higginson, and Paul McGillion. As the show evolved we said goodbye to some cast members (Rainbow and Torri) and welcome others (Jason Momoa, Amanda Tapping, Jewel Staite and Robert Picardo).

The show had a slightly darker edge to it. Some fans loved it; others did not. In the background, ideas were being presented to make a third incarnation of the series. After 10 years of SG-1, fans did not understand the decision by the now Syfy Channel not to renew Stargate Atlantis after a mere 5 years. When the announcement about the third incarnation of Stargate, Stargate Universe (aka SGU) was greenlit for production, fandom split in a bitter divide. Some felt SGA was not renewed so that SGU could proceed even though the creators and writers and producers assured fandom this was not true.

I remember hearing about the loose premise of SGU on Gateworld. It was somewhere around 3 a.m. my time and I remember posting, “Oh great, Stargate Voyager.” Being an avid Stargate fan since the beginning, loving both the movie, SG-1 and SGA in different ways, my reservations were put at ease.

Through Joe Mallozzi’s blog, I discovered David Blue, who was to play Eli Wallace, was on Twitter. I had resisted Twitter (and Facebook) up until that time, but the idea that I may actually be able to follow along his journey as he went through the production process, and possibly even have a remote chance to ask a question or share my thoughts directly, was very appealing. In those early days, he did not have as many followers as he does now and I did get more responses from him back then. As he recruited more and more of the cast to join Twitter, my addiction to this show was sealed. Even some of the extras, Herb Sommerfeld, Bill Butt, and the actor known as J.C. Williams on Twitter were getting into the fun. Still lingering in my mind was: Oh God, what if I don’t like it.

I watched intently October 2, 2009 along with everyone else. It was a difficult first show to follow with all the cutting in and out, going back and forth between the present time on Destiny versus what transpired before Destiny. I worried about the shaky camera because I had a very difficult time watching Cloverfield. There was so much information being relayed in those first three episodes (Air I, II and III) that I had to go back and watch it several times. I could see right away I was going to enjoy Eli Wallace’s journey. I had never seen such a complex character as Robert Carlyle’s portrayal of Dr. Nicholas Rush in the Stargate franchise before and this excited me.

These first episodes were also not without controversy. Aside from the split in fandom about SGA and SGU, the sex scene in Air I between 2nd Lt. Vanessa James (Julia Benson) and Lt. Matthew Scott (Brian Jacob Smith) lit the internet on fire. Parents were upset that they did not get a prior warning that this was in there so as to be able to make an informed choice for their children about whether or not it would appropriate to watch; prior to this time, they argued that they never had to censor their children from the Stargate franchise. The scene was actually cut from the United Kingdom’s airing. There was a PG-14 stamp at the beginning with appropriate warnings of content, but like everyone else, I did not see this until I went back and watched a second time.

While SGA had turned a bit darker from the SG-1 universe, this was even darker. For some, they stopped watching because of it; for others, it was the shaky camera. But like every television series, first seasons are all about discovering the characters, establishing the story. People were feeling like SGU had gotten off to a slow start.

I loved the idea that this was a show more closely tied to reality. Everything was not delivered in a perfect package. We finally had imperfect heroes. It was a healthy reboot of the franchise.

This show also doubled its main cast. Joining Robert Carlyle, David Blue, Brian Jacob Smith, and Elyse Levesque were Louis Ferreira (as Colonel Everett Young), Alaina Huffman (as Lt. Tamara Johansen, aka TJ), Jamil Walker Smith (Master Sergeant Ronald Greer), Ming-Na (as Camile Wray). Many of the guest-stars did such an outstanding job that they were showcased regularly: Patrick Gilmore (Dr. Dale Volker), Peter Kelamis (as Dr. Adam Brody), Jennifer Spence (as Dr. Lisa Park), Julia Benson (2nd Lt. Vanessa James) and Lou Diamond Phillips as (Colonel David Telford). Later, Mike Dopud (as Varro) was added to the cast. The show had many notable guest stars who gave terrific performances.

It seemed that each episode was a new personal best not only for the actors/actresses, but for the writers and the production crew and the visual effects team. After the first 10 episodes of Season 2 aired and Season 2 had finished production in December of 2010, the Syfy Channel announced that it would not pick up this show for any more seasons. Fans had hoped perhaps we could get closure from a movie, but alas that was not to be. Fans are still holding out hope that a season 3 will take some other form, like in a comic or a book, or that one fan will win enough at Lotto to fund another full season.

I would like to thank everyone who ever touched Stargate to bring us magic over these last 17 years . You brought wonderful action and adventures, held my heartstrings in your hands, brought in enough comedy when things seemed too dark, made me gasp in awe of the special effects and set designs. The Stargate wormhole was the glue that held many people together, both on-set and off. The fans who have been here will still be here to follow your careers as you set off to blaze more trails wherever you go. The friendships we have created are because of you and will continue because of the love we have for these shows. Maybe somewhere down the road, someone will pick up Stargate the original movie and do a remake of it; I can already hear the crack in fandom. The cycle begins again.  For now, I will need to leave what happens to the Destiny’s crew up to my imagination.

Earth Day 2011

22 04 2011

Earth Day began on April 22, 1970 in the United States and went international in 1990. It is a day that is “intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s natural environment.”

It would be difficult to calculate the number of people who actual recycle because many take their waste to other places because curbside service is not offered. There are estimates in percentages that 77% of the US recycles (which I would beg to differ with if you saw how many people on my block did NOT participate in fantastic curbside service). Australia is only 7%. Ireland is approximately 90%. Of the United States figures, 88% of the eastern part of the US recycles, with 86% of the western part, followed by 70% of the Midwest, followed by 68% of the south (come on Texas–we’re at the BOTTOM of ANOTHER list?).

The Woodlands, Texas, my current residence, provides wonderful opportunities to recycle practically everything. At curbside, the only things they don’t pick up are plastic bags, shrink wrap, Styrofoam, computers, TVs and electronics, ceramics, Pyrex, windows and mirrors. We have two recycling complexes located conveniently in the community. Out of the previous list, the only things they don’t take are the ceramics, Pyrex, windows and mirrors. Printer ink cartridges can be returned to a bin in the entrance way of both Best Buy and Target (there may be others, but those are the ones about which I know). Within the city of Houston, twice a year, an H.E.B. grocery store (pharmacy) who will take all prescription medication not being used in order to save our drinking water from being contaminated. I would love to see some place close start taking alkaline batteries. Although we try to use rechargeable ones, I have been collecting the ones I used to use and they are waiting for some place to appear so I can recycle them.

Earth Day The Woodlands 2009

Yet, for the ease and convenience our community provides to our residents, only about 25% of the houses in my neighborhood use their recycling bins. There are a few of us who actually have two recycling bins. Sometimes two bins are not enough for me. I have tried to find reasons why my neighbors would opt out, but either these people don’t recognize the need for recycling or they are just too lazy to develop the habits necessary. It is not a difficult process, but does require a change in habits. Some people refuse out of protest because they don’t believe in climate change.

This isn’t about climate change. This isn’t about Al Gore. This isn’t about the profit some corporations are making off the “green” label. You are a homeowner of planet Earth. Would you let your “home” become dilapidated, in disrepair, rotting away without performing at least routine maintenance? How would you feel when you saw your neighbors not doing things to keep up the maintenance of their “home” which then decreased the value of your home? Think of recycling as basic maintenance of planet Earth.

The world’s bad habits have caused some of these things to happen:

1. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch: Located in the central North Pacific Ocean, estimated to be twice the size of Texas. Plastic is breaking down, which the fish are now eating–fish that might make it to your dinner plate some day. Add this on top of the mercury toxicity levels in fish. There is now a possibility that the nuclear waste from Japan’s natural disaster will make its way here. We will then have nuclear, glowing fish.

Great Pacific Garbage Patch

2. The Atlantic Garbage Patch: Less well known, it made the news in 2010. The highest concentrations of plastic extend from Virginia to Cuba.

Atlantic Garbage Patch

3. Prescription drugs in our water: These are being passed through the urine and also from people putting their unused or expired pills down the toilet bowl. It includes antibiotics, anticonvulsants, hormones, steroids, and mood stabilizers.

Go to this link to see the list of drugs found in the drinking water in several cities across the United States: http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2008-03-10-drugs-tap-water_N.htm

Polluted Drinking Water

4. Corporate and country irresponsibility has contaminated air and water supplies and has been responsible for numerous spikes in disease clusters.

While taking on the world is never an easy task, we can break it down. We can claim personal responsibility of what we do in our lives. While I try to be responsible every day in practicing what I preach, there is always room for improvement.

Commit to cleaning up your home, planet Earth, today, before the next landfill is built behind the real house in which you dwell.

Despair

20 04 2011

For all the wonderful moments you experience with autism, there are exceptions. Back in 2005, I was deteriorating neurologically. I remember having a bunch of sticky notes all over my wall just so I could get through the day at work and not forget to do something. I was falling for no reason. I started to have to walk with a cane. It was at this time, my son’s school district was failing him and the fighting intensified by a factor of 10. Inside my head I was screaming, overwhelmed by what was happening to me, to him, unable to stop it. The more I tried to hold on and not get sucked into the vortex, the worse it got. The only thing I could do was let go and let God. Please once again, I do not mind if you share, but please respect my copyright. This, too, was published in another book of compiled works.

Despair

Drowning in a sea of suffering,
Sucked into a vortex with no vertical end,
Spinning hopelessly out of control,
Screams stifled by the void surrounding me.
Loneliness engulfs me,
Crushing me with its weight.
I let go and flow with it.
Only then do I reach the bottom
Where I’m on top of the water again,
Swimming for shore.

Graced by God

16 04 2011

This is a poem I wrote for my son back in 2005 that was subsequently published within a larger collection. In honor of Autism Awareness Month, I’d like to share this with you all. I do not mind if you circulate the poem, but please honor the copyright.  He was diagnosed in 1997 (at about 16-18 months of age) with the classic form of autism.  He is now 15.

Graced by God, you were given to us,
but like quicksand, you swiftly left
into a silent storm of autism.
Diving in after you, unwilling to surrender you
to this entity that ensnared your soul,
we made contact.

Your eyes, emerald and gray, began to meet ours again,
slowly holding the gaze seconds longer.
Like ants on a mountain, we fight for every inch of ground,
the elements always undermining some of the territory gained.

With streams of overflowing gratitude for every look, every touch,
every sound, every action you accomplish,
feeling blessed for the differences that set you apart,
that make you our very special child,
graced by God and given to us.

Breaking-In: T’ is Better to Have Loved Than Flossed

13 04 2011
Breaking In on Fox

The cast of "Breaking In" on Fox

Thanks to the Official FOX VIP program, I was treated to yet another preview of “BREAKING IN” scheduled to air on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at 9:30/8:30 ET/CT after American Idol. Possible minor spoilers are ahead.

Last week we were introduced to Oz (Christian Slater) and his crew from Contra Security: Cameron (Bret Harrison), a young college student caught hacking, who was given the choice of working for Contra Security or going to jail; Josh (Trevor Moore), the “intel” guy, who used to be the golden boy and is jealous of that status now going to Cameron; Melanie (Odette Yustman), the safe cracker, a wild child who has become the objection of Cameron’s affection; and Cash (Alphonso McAuley) who was busted stalking William Shatner as a trekkie and also given a job offer by Oz. Contra Security is the firm you hire to test how well your security system is NOT functioning.

This week, Contra Security is hired by an “old” woman to break into her safe. As with each episode, nothing is as straightforward as it seems and hilarity ensues.

Alyssa Milano (Romantically Challenged, Charmed) guest stars in this week’s episode as Amy, a dentist who Cameron meets at a restaurant. Amy has a secret but the all-knowing, all-seeing Oz is always one step ahead of everybody else.

According to “TV By The Numbers,” the debut of BREAKING IN on April 6, 2011 scored a 3.5 adults 18-49 rating and 9.9 million viewers. It was highest comedy retention after American Idol in more than 4 years, but premieres typically have higher ratings. This week’s episode will be more telling in how well the show will do.

The show is quick-paced and highly entertaining. I encourage you to give it a try. Join us on Twitter during the show for a tweet-up using the hashtag #BreakingIn.

Breaking-In on Fox — A Preview

5 04 2011

Because I am part of the Official FOX VIP program, one of the many wonderful perks is getting to see previews of shows (shows already on-air and new shows). Minor spoilers are possibly ahead.

On Wednesday, April 6, 2011 from (9:30-10:00 ET/PT) on Fox, BREAKING-IN starring Christian Slater as Oz, the mysterious owner of Contra Security, a high-tech security firm that people hire to break into their places first and find out where all the dents in that security is. Cameron (Bret Harrison of “V”, “Reaper“) is a young college student who is caught hacking. Oz tells him to join the company or go to jail.

Contra Security does not even necessarily use the highest tech of equipment to do the job–but a lot of creative thinking. Cameron’s first job does not go as planned thanks to Josh (Trevor Moore, “The Whitest Kids U’Know” and “Uncle Morty’s Dub Shack”), who is jealous of the new member of the team. Melanie (Odette Yustman, Brothers & Sisters, Cloverfield) rounds out the team as the safe cracker.

The show takes off from there. I was expecting this show to be a drama and was completely wrong. There is some quick cutting and editing. A heavy dose of comedy is thrown in. Geeks will love the Dragon-Con/Star Wars references. How Cash (Alphonso McAuley, “Love That Girl!” and “Chocolate News”) came to be on the team will delight every fan of science fiction out there. The Colbertnation will love the references to Sky Mall. And I have discovered one more way to possibly raise funds to keep my son, Patrick, in his autism school — selling “nerd pee.”

With Christian Slater at the helm, he has enough moxy and enough charm to make his character believable and to pull this team together. Bret Harrison and Alphonso McAuley have great comedic timing. Trevor Moore reminded me of “Psycho” in the movie “Stripes.” Odette Yustman plays her wild-child character quite well. This is going to be a fun show.

“And BOOM goes the dynamite.”
