These guys are famous for getting Fringe and Almost Human to trend every week. Here are the rules they followed. I have adapted them to the LiveTweetEvent for Enlisted this evening.
1. The chosen hashtag is #HandsOnHeads
2. The event will begin at 9 pm EST (8 central, 7 mountain, 6 pacific), Wednesday May 21, 2014– one hour before we watch Enlisted at 10 EST/9 central/8 mountain/7 pacific.
3. Don’t use #HandsOnHeads before the designated time: using the tag prematurely hampers trending chances.
4. You may spread the word about the event by placing parentheses around the #, like so: (#)HandsonHeads. This allows us to promote the campaign without interfering with trending algorithms.
5. One # term per Tweet. Multiple hashtags will keep a tweet from being counted towards the trend.
6. Lots of people tweeting matters more than the number of tweets.
7. Those with lots of followers help out a lot!
8. We can discuss aspects of the show in our tweets -TRY to include Enlisted (with no #) in your tweet if possible. We want to pique the interest of non fans.
Private accounts must have their locked status removed, as the tweets from these accounts do not count toward the trend tally.
(Sample tweet): Enlisted is the greatest comedy of 2014 #HandsOnHeads
9. Retweets are the easiest way to help out the trending effort. Just search for the hashtag, and retweet the ones that are interesting to you.
